Treatment Approach
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
- Gottman Method Couples Therapy Based on decades of research, this method gives couples tools to improve communication, manage conflict, and strengthen intimacy.
- Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
- Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
- Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) Helps parents strengthen their bond with their child while learning effective strategies to manage challenging behaviors. Through live coaching, parents practice positive communication, set clear boundaries, and build a more supportive, nurturing home environment.
- Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
- Play Therapy Uses toys, games, and creative play to help children express emotions. It is especially useful when children can’t fully verbalize their feelings.
- Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
- Sandplay Therapy Uses sand trays and miniature figures to allow symbolic expression. It is especially helpful for children and trauma survivors.
Approach Description: Jo's therapeutic approach is relational, attachment-focused and grounded in evidence-informed practice. She draws from a range of specialised approaches to support individuals, couples, children and families in ways that are both practical and deeply compassionate.
Her work with children and families is strongly informed by Circle of Security, Tuning into Kids, and Keeping Children Safe. These frameworks support parents in understanding their child’s emotional world, strengthening secure attachment, and responding to behaviour through connection rather than control. Jo also integrates principles from Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), particularly the use of PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy), to foster safety and relational healing.
In her work with couples, Jo draws from Gottman Method (Level 1 & 2) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). These approaches support couples to move beyond recurring conflict patterns, strengthen emotional connection, improve communication, and develop healthier relational dynamics grounded in accountability and empathy.
For adults and teens, she integrates elements of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), helping clients develop awareness of their internal world with curiosity and self-compassion. This approach supports emotional regulation, trauma processing, and greater internal harmony. Her training in Advanced Grief Counselling (CAGS) allows her to sensitively support clients navigating bereavement, ambiguous loss, life transitions and complex grief experiences.
Across all modalities, Jo’s work is anchored in safety, collaboration and respect. She believes that meaningful change occurs within secure relationships, whether that relationship is between partners, within a family, or within the individual themselves.
Her approach is structured when needed, gentle when required, and always attuned to the unique needs of each client.
