Dr. Meghan Miller
Psychologist, PsyD, LP
Low self-esteem doesn’t always mean lacking confidence. Sometimes it shows up as imposter feelings, difficulty setting boundaries, over-functioning for others, or constantly questioning whether you’re doing enough. In therapy, we explore how past experiences, achievement patterns, and internal narratives have shaped the way you see yourself. Using CBT and values-based interventions, I help clients build a more stable sense of self-worth that isn’t dependent solely on productivity or approval. The goal is to strengthen your ability to trust yourself, advocate for your needs, and move through life with greater confidence and clarity.

Self-esteem is the overall opinion of ourselves; our beliefs about our abilities and limitations. Self-esteem is shaped by our thoughts, relationships, and experiences. Many beliefs we hold about ourselves today reflect messages we've received from others over time. Healthy self-esteem contributes to feelings of worth and security. If we have healthy self-esteem, we are more likely to have positive relationships with others and we are confident in our abilities and choices.
Some of the traits of low self-esteem are negative feelings about ourselves, or being overly critical. This in turn can produce depression, anxiety or shame. Low-self esteem can also cause relationship problems. For example, one may have the tendency to tolerate inappropriate behaviors form their partner, or feel that they are not loveable. Fear of being judged by other people may also be an issue, along with a lack of self-care of self-harming behaviors.
Often low-self esteem comes from the way we were raised in our family of origin such as abuse, excessive criticism, demeaning behaviors and neglect. It can also be caused by current relationships and circumstances. If you are struggling with low-self esteem, which is causing a host of other issues please reach out to me. We can work through the core issues and help you form a more positive view of yourself filled with confidence and security in your abilities.

Brianna Gomez
Pre-Licensed Professional, MS - Bilingual Trauma Informed Therapist
Self-esteem can be such a complicated topic and helping the client to identify their own personal goals is an important part of the work towards establishing a healthier sense of self. Difficulties with self-esteem can frequently stem from traumatic and/or difficult experiences throughout childhood and clients will be supported to discuss such types of situations from their past only if and when they may feel ready to do so. Frequently treatment goals related to self-esteem are gathering unconditional positive regard for oneself based on who we are as individuals rather than what we may or may not be accomplishing.
