Dipak Jilka - Psychotherapist & Counsellor (He/Him)

Therapist, Psychotherapy & Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) – PACFA Reg. Clinical 26570
Holding a grounded stance of compassion, empathy, non-judgment and light-hearted curiosity, I provide a safe and reflective space for clients to explore and gently unpack their lives. While clients may initially seek support for concerns such as anger, anxiety, compulsive sexual behaviours, relationship difficulties, or other presenting issues, my experience has shown that the underlying dynamics are often more complex than they first appear. My therapeutic ethos is centred on not viewing clients as problems to be fixed, but as individuals whose struggles deserve to be witnessed with respect, depth and thoughtful exploration. I work collaboratively, supporting clients to develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience and clarity about how they wish to live. I am of South Asian heritage, raised in London, and have lived in Sydney for over 30 years. Having straddled Eastern and Western cultures, including the particular nuances of my Indian background, I bring a culturally informed and integrative perspective to my practice. My earlier corporate career and lived experience of family life in Australia, alongside my own encounters with anxiety, stress and periods of low mood, have deepened my understanding of the pressures many clients face. My personal journey toward greater meaning, purpose and self-understanding informs my belief in psychotherapy as a transformative process. I am committed to supporting clients in cultivating insight, living more consciously, and moving toward lives that feel authentic and self-directed. If this approach resonates with you, I welcome the opportunity to connect.

Treatment Approach

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Experiential Therapy Involves hands-on activities to bring emotions into the present moment. It helps clients process feelings more deeply than through conversation alone.
  • Gestalt Therapy Encourages awareness of thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment. It helps people integrate different parts of themselves for wholeness.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Psychosocial Therapy Looks at how social and environmental factors affect psychological health. It emphasizes relationships, community, and resilience.
Approach Description: I am influenced by existential & humanistic approaches to therapy, being informed by Gestalt therapy, Psychosexual influences and contemporary Jungian ideas on the human condition. I take a pluralistic approach to therapy, meaning there is no "right" approach to therapy and I bring to the therapy room what each client needs. I espouse the following significant points that shape my work and what you can experience with me.(a) I do not see my clients as a problem to be fixed, instead I espouse my clients are challenged with their unique experience of live. (b) I do not diagnose or pathologize clients with psychological labels as this limits enquiry and exploration of the experience of life's challenges (c) I adopt a pluralistic approach to therapy, which means there is no single fixed approach to therapy. I integrate the approaches I am trained and experienced in to meet your unique needs. (d) Whilst I have my identity as a man of Indian origin and specific age, I am here to support clients of all identities, ethnicities, ages, genders, etc. If I sound like the type of therapist you would like to work with, please call me and we can discuss how I can support you.
