Treatment Approach

  • Biopsychosocial Therapy Takes into account biological, psychological, and social factors in understanding mental health. It looks at the whole person, not just symptoms.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Psychosocial Therapy Looks at how social and environmental factors affect psychological health. It emphasizes relationships, community, and resilience.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
Approach Description: As a relational psychodynamic therapist, I believe that the therapeutic connection (that's us!) is what drives healing. It's not just about what you talk about or the skills you build in therapy, it's about what happens in each session between us as therapist and client that helps you learn new, healthier models for relationships and attachment—supporting you in rewiring your brain for healthier connection. This starts with building a genuine, trusting therapeutic connection so you feel safe enough to explore difficult experiences from the past and present, and with gentle exploration of how your past relationships (especially with your caregivers in childhood) continue to affect you and show up in your present life/relationships. It offers a safer space to experience and express difficult thoughts and feelings that you don't feel able to elsewhere, a low-stakes space to gain insight, practice moving through conflict, and learn new ways to communicate and connect. --- My approach is also affirming and strengths-based. Whether you're trans, queer, questioning, neurodivergent, kinky, an immigrant or cultural or spiritual outsider—your diverse, intersecting identities are valid and a part of you. I see them as sources of strength and wisdom, not deficits or problems that need explaining or justification! --- My work is trauma-informed. I focus on creating a safe-feeling, collaborative space that is attuned to your needs, respectful of your boundaries, and moving at the pace YOU set. --- As a social worker, I think and work systemically, not just individually. You don't exist in a vacuum! When we work together, we're working with ALL of you. Biology, psychology, social factors ("biopsychosocial")... systemic oppressions... trauma passed down through the generations... the personal, the political... it's all welcome in the therapy room.

Molly Toomey Practice Description
Welcome! I'm Molly, a clinical social worker and therapist offering affirming, trauma-informed care for people who live and love alternatively, both in Connecticut and Vermont, USA and internationally. I specialize in holistic, trauma-informed support for LGBTQIA+ folks, neurodivergent people, and spiritually, romantically, and sexually alternative folks. I'm deeply passionate about offering a warm, authentic therapeutic space for folks who often feel unseen, unheard, judged, or misunderstood in traditional therapy settings. --- I'm not your average private practice therapist! I'm a trained, licensed clinical social worker with thousands of hours of supervised experience, clinical licensure, and nearly a decade in the field, and my work extends far beyond the four walls of a comfy office. I've been working on-the-ground in my communities since 2010, building bridges across languages and cultures through bilingual social work, therapy, sex education, and health care and immigrant advocacy work. I am an immigrant and have worked in two countries and three languages. I have both professional and personal experience in all of the communities I serve. The support I offer is both affirming and competent, backed by years of education, professional experience, formal training, and community wisdom. --- For Connecticut and Vermont residents, I offer online therapy as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. (Note to the night owls and early birds: I offer online therapy from very early morning (5:00 AM) until early afternoon! This is ideal for shift workers, health care workers, first responders, teachers, students, creatives, and creatures of the night.) --- I also offer counseling sessions online to folks in Germany and many other countries worldwide from my current homebase in Jena, Germany. (Folks in Weimar, Erfurt, and Leipzig—please reach out for in-person availability!) I offer this sociotherapeutic support service as a psychological counselor and state-recognized social worker in Germany. --- Feeling ready to start your journey? I offer free 30-minute video consult calls to help us determine if we're a good fit before we start the journey together. Please reach out to me here to schedule a call. You can also learn more about my approach and how I can help you on my websites, twotorchestherapy.com (for Connecticut and Vermont residents) and counselingwithmolly.com (for folks in Germany and abroad).
