I have been in private practice as a licensed clinical psychologist since 2013. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at National Louis University. Before that, I completed my undergraduate degree in journalism at Northwestern University. I worked in magazine publishing for 10 years before returning to graduate school to study psychology. During that part of my career, I gained a wide range of professional experiences, including hiring and firing staff, managing a departmental budget, frequent business travel (and feeling its effects on my personal life), being laid off, and having to lay off others. I can absolutely relate to people who struggle to find meaning in their professional and personal lives. After the events of 9/11 and some difficult experiences that followed, I decided to go back to school because I wanted to do something that felt more personally meaningful. I love my work as a clinical psychologist. Over the years, I have developed a particular interest in working with people with anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety, OCD, perfectionism anxiety, panic disorder, and trauma. This is a very anxious world we all live in, but anxiety and avoidance don’t have to dictate the choices you make in your life!

Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
Approach Description: I am an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) practitioner. ACT is a behavioral intervention to help people learn strategies to live life more in the present, more focused on important values and goals, and less focused on painful thoughts, feelings and experiences. ACT teaches people how to engage with and overcome painful thoughts and feelings through acceptance and mindfulness techniques, to develop self-compassion and flexibility, and to build life-enhancing patterns of behavior. ACT is not about overcoming pain or fighting emotions; it’s about embracing life and feeling everything it has to offer. It offers a way out of suffering by choosing to live a life based on what matters most.

Margie Melaniphy Practice Description
I like to be highly collaborative with clients. I want us to work on understanding how you would want your life to look different if you didn't feel so limited by your anxiety. Then, we can start to uncover the worries and fears that feel like they get in the way of your progress, and develop coping strategies for those thoughts and feelings, so that you can move forward.
