Life has many challenges, it's how you grow from your past that defines who you are in life. You may feel alone, misunderstood, and unfulfilled with your life or personal relationships. Perhaps you're having intense negative emotions. People typically enter therapy when they are in distress, although it's usually the long-term and underlying struggles that concern them the most. Initially, we will work quickly to address your immediate pain and provide relief. As therapy progresses, our focus may shift so you develop more positive and enriching relationships with yourself and others. My therapeutic approach focuses on the interpersonal dynamics that impact your daily experience. I focus on helping individuals become unstuck from depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and intense negative emotions. In therapy we look for the behaviors, attitudes, and patterns that protected you in the past but no longer serve a purpose. Therapy is a process we experience together, we are all recovering from something, we are all growing and becoming.

Treatment Approach

  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Gestalt Therapy Encourages awareness of thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment. It helps people integrate different parts of themselves for wholeness.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Jungian Therapy Draws on Carl Jung’s ideas about archetypes, dreams, and the collective unconscious. It helps people explore deeper layers of meaning.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. It helps people notice thoughts without judgment and respond more calmly.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychoanalytic Therapy Based on Freud’s theories, it explores unconscious conflicts and past experiences. It seeks to bring hidden issues into awareness.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Social Learning Therapy Based on the idea that people learn behaviors by observing others. It applies modeling and reinforcement to encourage healthy change.
Approach Description: I believe that understanding ourselves better can help us make meaningful changes in our lives. Often, the difficulties we experience today are connected to earlier experiences, familiar patterns, and the ways we have learned to relate to ourselves and others. My approach is primarily psychodynamic and interpersonal, but I recognize that no single approach works for everyone. I draw from different therapeutic methods depending on your individual needs, concerns, and goals. I view psychotherapy as a collaborative process built on trust, openness, and mutual respect. Together, we explore not only what may be troubling you in the present, but also the underlying feelings and experiences that may be contributing to those difficulties. My goal is to help you develop greater self awareness, healthier relationships, and a stronger sense of confidence in navigating life’s challenges.

Andrew Golden Practice Description
I am a licensed psychotherapist in New Canaan, Connecticut, with more than 25 years of clinical experience providing individual psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. My work focuses on helping people navigate anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, substance use, life transitions, and the emotional challenges that arise during periods of uncertainty or significant personal change. My approach to psychotherapy is grounded in the belief that understanding ourselves more fully allows us to make meaningful changes in how we think, feel, and relate to others. I draw from psychodynamic and interpersonal approaches while recognizing that each person brings a unique history, perspective, and set of circumstances into treatment. Rather than applying a single method to everyone, I tailor our work to your individual needs and goals. Much of my clinical work involves helping people recognize recurring patterns in their relationships, understand the influence of earlier experiences, and explore the feelings and conflicts that may contribute to their present difficulties. I also have extensive experience working with individuals and families affected by addiction, as well as those confronting professional setbacks and personal crises. An additional area of my practice involves working with individuals navigating the criminal justice system, including those facing investigations, pending charges, sentencing, or the consequences of legal involvement. I recognize the profound psychological impact these circumstances can have on an individual’s identity, relationships, emotional well-being, and sense of stability. My work provides a confidential, nonjudgmental space to address the anxiety, shame, uncertainty, and isolation that often accompany these experiences, while helping individuals maintain perspective and navigate difficult transitions. I believe that effective psychotherapy begins with a relationship built on trust, openness, and mutual respect. My role is not simply to offer advice or solutions, but to provide a thoughtful, confidential environment where you can speak freely, examine difficult experiences, and develop a greater understanding of yourself. I offer in person appointments in New Canaan and secure telehealth sessions throughout Connecticut. I am currently accepting new clients.
