Treatment Approach
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
- Biopsychosocial Therapy Takes into account biological, psychological, and social factors in understanding mental health. It looks at the whole person, not just symptoms.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
- Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
- Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
- Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
- Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
- Play Therapy Uses toys, games, and creative play to help children express emotions. It is especially useful when children can’t fully verbalize their feelings.
- Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
- Sandplay Therapy Uses sand trays and miniature figures to allow symbolic expression. It is especially helpful for children and trauma survivors.
- Schema Therapy Identifies deep-rooted negative patterns formed in childhood. It combines CBT, attachment theory, and experiential methods for change.
- Somatic Therapy Helps clients notice how emotions are stored in the body. It uses breath, movement, and awareness for healing trauma and stress.
Approach Description: Our approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based, neuroaffirming care. We integrate a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to the needs of each client - including Compassion Focused Therapy, Eclectic approaches, Schema Therapy, EMDR, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, and Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy .
Whether we're working with a child struggling with emotional regulation, a teenager navigating identity or social anxiety, adults exploring ADHD and burnout, or any other emotional, social, or affective mood disorder, we take time to build a sense of safety, curiosity, and connection. We see each client as a whole person - not a diagnosis - and tailor treatment to honour their strengths, life stage, and unique wiring.
We also weave in elements of narrative therapy, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation to support lasting change. Therapy with us is not one-size-fits-all , it’s a unique process of discovery, validation, and empowerment.

At A to Z Psychology, we do more than treat symptoms — we equip you (and your family) with lifelong tools to move through challenges with confidence, clarity, and self-compassion. Led by Dr Nicole Hess, a PhD-qualified psychologist and experienced clinician, our Brisbane-based practice specialises in neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD, autism, learning disabilities (including dyslexia and dysgraphia), and the emotional experiences that often accompany them.
We work with children, teens, and adults, and tailor each assessment, treatment plan, and support pathway to your individual needs. Therapy is grounded in leading neuroscience and evidence-based modalities, including Schema Therapy, EMDR, DBT, Interpersonal Social Rhythms Therapy (for bipolar), and play-based interventions in our dedicated play room. We also offer group coaching programs, psychoeducational advocacy, and school-based consultations.
What makes us different?
We truly listen. Our clients often tell us they finally feel understood. That’s because our practice is built on deep empathy, genuine care, and the belief that people are more than their diagnosis. We honour your story, your strengths, and your struggles.
Whether you're a parent worried about your child’s emotional wellbeing, a woman navigating the maze of ADHD and burnout, or a teen feeling lost and overwhelmed — you're not alone, and you don’t have to do this on your own. If you’re ready to take the next step, we’d be honoured to walk beside you.
