Being a therapist is a great privilege. I enjoy working with anyone who is eager to understand what is happening in their life and why they are struggling. Together, we'll try to understand what is creating the trouble - including perhaps some unconscious patterns that are at work - and then we'll put them in perspective, cut them down to size, and work through what can be done. I create a safe, empathic, and comfortable environment for counseling where we can talk about anything at all without judgment, and in total privacy.

Client Focus

Session Format: Couple, Individual sessions.

Treatment Approach

  • Contemplative Psychotherapy Combines mindfulness and meditation practices with modern psychology. It encourages awareness and compassion as part of the healing process.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
  • Intersubjective Therapy Explores the shared emotional experience between therapist and client. It emphasizes connection and mutual understanding.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Object Relations Therapy Focuses on how early caregiver relationships shape current relationships. It aims to improve patterns of attachment and trust.
  • Psychoanalytic Therapy Based on Freud’s theories, it explores unconscious conflicts and past experiences. It seeks to bring hidden issues into awareness.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Self Psychology Explores the development of self-esteem and identity. It emphasizes the importance of empathy in healing.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: I am trained as a psychoanalyst in the classical tradition, but my approach is very flexible and open. Fundamentally, we talk. I listen. We establish a foundation of trust in an open, accepting environment. I have a sense of humor. I will share my thoughts with you, and allow you to relate to me in the way that is most helpful to you, while being very mindful of creating the right kind of environment for your circumstances.

Alistair Highet Practice Description
I work with couples, adult individuals, and older teens. My specialties include sexuality and gender issues, grief and loss, career and life-decision counseling, what we might call "existential" fears and doubts, anxiety, depression, and addiction behavior of all kinds. As a psychoanalyst, I have been trained in the classical tradition -- which is very deep and extensive -- but my approach is flexible and unpretentious. Ultimately, our conversation is a relationship of trust. Now in practice for over 20 years -- trained with couples and in a variety of other specialties -- I am confident that I can be of help to you, no matter what you are struggling with. I have been very fortunate to witness profound changes in my patients, and to see them go on to grow and prosper.
