I believe good therapy is more than symptom management. It’s about helping people understand themselves more honestly, develop greater emotional awareness, and build a life that feels more grounded, connected, and authentic. Many of the people I work with feel stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand — anxiety, shame, compulsive behaviors, emotional disconnection, relationship struggles, or cycles of secrecy and self-criticism. Often, these struggles are not simply about “bad habits” or lack of willpower, but about deeper emotional and relational dynamics that have never been fully understood or addressed. My style is warm, direct, thoughtful, and engaged. I aim to create a space where people can speak openly about subjects that are difficult to discuss elsewhere, without feeling judged, dismissed, or reduced to a diagnosis. I believe meaningful therapy requires both compassion and honesty: the ability to understand pain without losing sight of accountability, growth, and change. I have particular experience helping individuals and couples struggling with compulsive sexual behavior, pornography addiction, betrayal trauma, intimacy difficulties, anxiety, shame, and trauma-related issues. I also work extensively with clients from religious and culturally sensitive communities, where these struggles often carry additional layers of secrecy, fear, and isolation. Therapy can help people move from surviving on autopilot toward living with greater clarity, presence, integrity, and connection — both to themselves and to the people they care about most.

Treatment Approach

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.

  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.

Asher Lipner Practice Description
My practice, which you can find at www.guidingpaththerapy.com, focuses on helping individuals and couples work through anxiety, trauma, shame, compulsive behaviors, relationship struggles, and emotional disconnection in a thoughtful, practical, and depth-oriented way. My approach integrates psychodynamic therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), trauma-informed work, behavioral strategies, and principles drawn from 12-step recovery. I believe lasting change comes not only from controlling behaviors, but from understanding the emotional, relational, and developmental factors that drive them. A significant area of my practice involves working with compulsive sexual behavior, pornography addiction, betrayal trauma, and intimacy-related concerns. Many clients come to therapy feeling exhausted by cycles of secrecy, guilt, self-criticism, or repeated attempts to “just stop.” Together, we work to understand the underlying emotional patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, and build a more honest and connected life. I also work with couples struggling with broken trust, emotional withdrawal, communication difficulties, and the aftermath of secrecy or betrayal. My goal is to help partners move beyond blame and defensiveness toward greater honesty, understanding, accountability, and emotional safety. Clients often appreciate that my work balances depth with practicality. Therapy is not only a place for insight, but also a place to develop concrete tools for managing triggers, improving communication, strengthening relationships, and creating meaningful change in everyday life. I offer confidential telehealth therapy as well as in-person sessions in Jackson, New Jersey.
