Helping people learn about the healing power of art is my passion. As an artist myself, art making has always been my go-to self-care activity, even before I knew about the field of art therapy. When I learned about art therapy, I instantly knew that I wanted to make it my life's work. Its important for you to know, though, that you don't have to be an artist to benefit from art therapy. I design each session about the client I am working with. Art therapy is not a one-size-fits all type of therapy so every session is uniquely designed to fit your healing journey.

Treatment Approach

  • Art Therapy Uses creative activities like drawing, painting, or sculpture as a way to express emotions. It is especially helpful when words are hard to find.
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
  • Dance / Movement Therapy Uses movement and body awareness to express emotions and improve mental health. It can increase confidence, reduce stress, and support healing.
  • Drama Therapy Uses role-play, storytelling, and theater techniques to explore problems and emotions. It helps people practice new ways of relating to others.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Music Therapy Uses music listening, songwriting, or rhythm exercises to support healing. It is effective for stress, emotional expression, and cognitive challenges.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Sandplay Therapy Uses sand trays and miniature figures to allow symbolic expression. It is especially helpful for children and trauma survivors.
  • Somatic Therapy Helps clients notice how emotions are stored in the body. It uses breath, movement, and awareness for healing trauma and stress.

Education: I received my undergraduate degree in Studio Art with a Concentration in Painting from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. I received my Masters in Expressive Arts Therapy with an Art Therapy Concentration from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.

Bridges Art Therapt Practice Description
At my art therapy studio in Carrboro, I provide art therapy to individuals of all ages and I also offer small groups. I also consider myself a community based therapist, serving people where they are, in and around my town. I provide group art therapy in schools, art centers, mental health agencies and more, often serving people who otherwise would not have access to art therapy. While I mostly work with people in-person, I am open to working with people online if that fits your lifestyle best. Art therapy can benefit anyone but there are some instances when it is particularly helpful. Children, for instance, often find art therapy more enjoyable than traditional talk therapy partly because art therapy bypasses the need to use language to express how they are feeling. Children sometimes have not learned the words to share what is in their hearts but through the arts, they are able to tell their stories. Art therapy is also very beneficial for people who have experienced trauma. Because we create art not just using our head but also using our body, art therapy is considered a body-based therapy. Traumatic memories are stored in our bodies through our senses: sight, sound, smells, sensations, etc. Because we use our bodies to create art, we are treating the trauma where it is stored - in our bodies. Art therapy also often feels safer than simply talking about trauma because the client is able to create an object that is separate from their body, allow them to, at least for a moment, separate from the trauma. While my main modality is art therapy, I am trained as an expressive arts therapist which means I have some training in the other expressive arts: music, dance, drama, etc. Sometimes if a person feels stuck in therapy, moving into another modality can help them move into a space of greater healing. Being able to meet my clients where they are at and find modalities that work for them in any given moment is an important part of my practice as a therapist.
