Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC-S, ATR-BC®, REAT
 therapist: Elizabeth Starnes,

Reaching out for support often means something in your life feels too heavy to carry alone. You don’t have to navigate it by yourself. I offer a space that moves at your pace—without pressure or expectations—where you can begin to make sense of what you’re carrying. I work with individuals navigating trauma and PTSD, anxiety, grief, and life transitions. Together, we gently explore patterns shaped by past experiences and how they continue to show up in your thoughts, relationships, and sense of self. This work isn’t about forcing change—it’s about creating space for clarity, self-understanding, and a deeper sense of trust in yourself. My approach integrates talk therapy with expressive arts therapy, grounded in specialized training in art therapy and intermodal expressive work. This means we actively use modalities such as visual journaling, storytelling, movement, and other forms of creative expression as part of the therapeutic process—not just talking about your experiences, but engaging with them in ways that support deeper understanding and change. Clients often describe me as steady, down-to-earth, and genuine. I value creating a space where you feel safe, seen, and able to show up as you are.

Treatment Approach

  • Art Therapy Uses creative activities like drawing, painting, or sculpture as a way to express emotions. It is especially helpful when words are hard to find.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) An evidence-based treatment for PTSD that teaches clients to reframe unhelpful thoughts about trauma. It helps reduce guilt, shame, and fear.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Experiential Therapy Involves hands-on activities to bring emotions into the present moment. It helps clients process feelings more deeply than through conversation alone.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Somatic Therapy Helps clients notice how emotions are stored in the body. It uses breath, movement, and awareness for healing trauma and stress.
Approach Description: My approach is client-centered and grounded in expressive arts therapy, where we actively engage in both verbal and nonverbal ways of exploring your experience. This includes modalities such as visual journaling, storytelling, movement, and other forms of creative expression as integral parts of the therapeutic process—not just talking about what’s happening, but engaging with it in ways that support deeper insight and change. I adapt the work to align with your natural interests and forms of expression, which may include music, writing, poetry, sound, or hands-on creative processes. You don’t need to be “artistic”—we use what feels most accessible and meaningful to you. I also incorporate a parts-informed perspective to help us understand the different aspects of you that are trying to cope, protect, or be heard. This allows us to approach your experiences with greater curiosity, compassion, and understanding. I offer a steady, supportive space while honoring your pace and what feels safe to explore. For clients who are interested, I am also trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based trauma treatment traditionally structured as a talk therapy approach, which can be thoughtfully integrated with expressive arts processes when it aligns with your goals and readiness.

Elizabeth Starnes Practice Description
My practice is dedicated to supporting individuals who feel caught in cycles of self-criticism, shame, or self-doubt, often feeling disconnected from who they are and how they want to show up in their lives. Many of the people I work with come in feeling stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand—reacting in ways they later regret, struggling in relationships, or carrying a deep sense of self-doubt, shame, or “not feeling good enough.” Often, these patterns are rooted in past experiences where safety, trust, or emotional support were missing. Even when life looks “fine” on the outside, something inside can feel unsettled, confusing, or hard to control. You may know you want something different for yourself and your relationships—but feel unsure how to get there. In our work together, we slow things down and begin to make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface. My approach integrates talk therapy with expressive arts therapy, using modalities such as visual journaling, storytelling, movement, and other forms of creative expression. These approaches are not limited to specific techniques and are adapted to align with your natural ways of expressing and understanding your experience. A parts-informed perspective is also incorporated to help us understand the different aspects of you that are trying to cope, protect, or be heard. This allows us to move beyond just talking about your experiences and begin to understand them on a deeper level—including the emotional and physical responses connected to past trauma. This process isn’t about a quick fix—it’s about building awareness, understanding your patterns, and developing a more compassionate and grounded relationship with yourself over time. I offer a steady, supportive space where you can show up as you are and move at a pace that feels manageable. I’m known for being warm, genuine, and down-to-earth. If this resonates, I welcome you to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.
