Treatment Approach

  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Family Constellation Therapy Explores hidden family dynamics and patterns across generations. It helps people understand how past family issues may be influencing current struggles.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
Approach Description: I work together with my clients. You are the expert on your life; I am the expert in psychology. We need each other's expertise to be effective in bringing the changes that will lead to your happiness and well-being.

Janice Shapiro Practice Description
My practice is fueled by the belief that we mostly learn from our experiences, good and bad. Our reactions to those experiences (thoughts, feelings, behaviors and beliefs) are flexible and can be changed. That's where therapy comes in. I help clients grow insights into how and why behaviors came to be, and teach the skills for change. Change is one of the hardest things to do, because change requires action. Taking action is probably the most important thing to do in therapy. So, with lots of practice and support, I prescribe the actions for making the necessary changes; we do it gradually, gently and with lots of support. That's what I love about therapy; it can strengthen and reveal your Inner Core, making you the person you were meant to be.
