Carter Doyle (He/Him)

Psychiatric Nurse/Therapist, PMHNP-BC, EMT-P
 therapist: Carter Doyle,
Ann Arbor, MI 48103
Arizona, Hawaii, Michigan
I help adults heal from trauma, spiritual/religious harm, and identity-related stress in a space that is affirming, trauma-informed, and clinically solid. I’m a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner who integrates psychotherapy (IFS, EMDR-informed, parts work) with thoughtful medication management when appropriate. My work is especially welcoming to LGBTQ+ clients and to people recovering from conversion/reparative (SOGICE) experiences. We go at your pace and focus on changes that actually last.

Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Christian Counseling Blends psychological practices with Christian values and scripture. It provides faith-based support for life challenges and spiritual growth.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. It helps people notice thoughts without judgment and respond more calmly.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Schema Therapy Identifies deep-rooted negative patterns formed in childhood. It combines CBT, attachment theory, and experiential methods for change.
Approach Description: My approach is collaborative, parts-informed, and trauma-focused. We identify the protective parts that have worked hard to keep you safe — especially around sexuality, gender, or faith — and help them soften so you can live more from your core Self. I integrate IFS with trauma-responsive methods (including EMDR-informed work and regulation skills) so we’re not just talking about the past, we’re helping your nervous system feel safer in the present. Medication can be discussed when it supports this work, but therapy and relationship stay central. My practice is explicitly LGBTQ+ affirming and welcoming to people healing from SOGICE or spiritual abuse.

Therapy Sessions Carter Doyle Practice Description
My practice blends depth-oriented psychotherapy with psychiatric expertise so you don’t have to choose between “talk therapy” and “meds” — we can consider both in one place, only when it’s clinically indicated. I work with adults navigating complex or relational trauma, minority stress, spiritual or religious harm, and the aftereffects of sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts (SOGICE). Many of my clients are thoughtful, high-capacity people who have carried a lot for a long time and are ready to understand their reactions instead of just pushing through them. Together we map what’s happening in your internal system, reduce shame, and build more flexible responses. Clinically, I often use Internal Family Systems (IFS), trauma-responsive and EMDR-informed approaches, ACT/DBT skills as needed, and nervous-system education. As a PMHNP, I can also help you evaluate medication or supplementation options, but we decide this collaboratively — it’s never the only tool. Care is LGBTQ+ affirming and culturally responsive. Sessions are offered online through a secure platform, which makes therapy accessible for people with busy schedules or who prefer privacy from home. I collaborate with other providers when helpful and provide clear treatment planning.
