Thumos is a counselling and mental health service based in Melbourne, Australia. We support children, young people and their families to navigate challenges and life transitions through the key pillars of Understanding, Change and Connection. We also provide specialised support to young people in care, who have had contact with the youth justice system or those who have experienced trauma and attachment disruption. Tailored programs for boys and young men navigating emotions, rites of passage and identity are available. We work to assist every client in achieving their goals. We draw from a range of person-centred therapeutic modalities including Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy. We also utilise a trauma-informed framework across all therapies. Known for his relaxed, non-judgemental style Michael is able to engage young people who may be hesitant or resistant to counselling. Michael has experience working with vulnerable young people, including Child Protection & Youth Justice cases. Michael remains involved in projects to support positive masculinity, boys' identity and rites of passage.

Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
Approach Description: Known for his relaxed and engaging style, Michael creates a safe, supportive space where young people, especially boys, can explore challenges and build emotional insight.
