Licensed Professional Counselor, EdS, MA, LPC, LPCMH, ACS, EMDRPT-II
As an award-winning psychotherapist, I specialize in high-impact individual therapy for capable men. With over 15 years of experience and advanced trauma training, I’m known for my work in pornography addiction, sex addiction, and men’s mental health. My practice is frequently sought out by other therapists who refer men facing issues requiring specialized treatment—such as sex and porn addiction, trauma, anger, infidelity, and anxiety. I have also been featured in media speaking about these topics. As a clinical supervisor, I train other therapists in gold-standard, evidence-based treatments. I provide expert, structured, results-oriented therapy for men who want real change—not generic talk therapy or surface-level coping. Clients reach out when they want depth, direction, and results so if you’re here, you’ve already taken the first step toward real change. Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Christian Counseling Blends psychological practices with Christian values and scripture. It provides faith-based support for life challenges and spiritual growth.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) An evidence-based treatment for PTSD that teaches clients to reframe unhelpful thoughts about trauma. It helps reduce guilt, shame, and fear.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, client-centered approach that strengthens motivation for change. It is especially effective for addictions and health behaviors.
  • Schema Therapy Identifies deep-rooted negative patterns formed in childhood. It combines CBT, attachment theory, and experiential methods for change.
  • Somatic Therapy Helps clients notice how emotions are stored in the body. It uses breath, movement, and awareness for healing trauma and stress.
Approach Description: My approach is structured, trauma-informed, and focused on lasting change rather than symptom management alone. I integrate evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)—the three gold-standard, medically recognized treatments for trauma—alongside CBT, ACT, and schema-focused work to address both current behaviors and the underlying psychological drivers that sustain them. Treatment is active and goal-directed. Therapy emphasizes accountability, follow-through, and work outside of sessions, not just insight gained in the room. Clients are expected to engage between sessions through targeted exercises, behavioral experiments, and skills practice so progress continues week to week rather than resetting each session. I take an encouraging but challenging stance—supportive, direct, and honest. We focus on stabilizing behavior, reducing escalation, and then targeting deeper patterns such as maladaptive beliefs, emotional regulation difficulties, avoidance, and trauma-related learning that keep symptoms and behaviors recurring under stress. This approach allows therapy to move beyond short-term coping and produce change that holds over time.

Peter D. Ruffini Practice Description
Proven Path Counseling is a private practice offering individual outpatient psychotherapy for adult men. I work with men struggling with pornography addiction, sex addiction, compulsive sexual behavior, anxiety, anger, trauma, and the personal and relational consequences that often follow when these issues remain unresolved. Many of the men I work with are capable and driven, yet frustrated by cycles that persist despite effort, insight, or previous therapy. In my experience, these concerns are rarely resolved through symptom-focused or generic approaches alone. Without targeted, specialized work, therapy can stall or remain surface-level, even when motivation is high. While I can address a wide range of presenting concerns, I’ve chosen to specialize deeply rather than spread thin, allowing the work to move beyond surface-level treatment and produce lasting change. My approach is structured, active, and focused on durability. Therapy begins by stabilizing behavior and reducing escalation so progress can occur without ongoing crises. From there, the work targets the psychological drivers that keep patterns repeating—such as emotional regulation difficulties, shame-based coping, unresolved trauma, attachment wounds, and rigid belief systems that surface under stress. When these underlying mechanisms are addressed, change becomes sustainable rather than temporary. This is not open-ended talk therapy. I provide focused, evidence-based treatment for men who are willing to engage seriously in the process and expect therapy to produce real results. Services are offered in person and via telehealth for clients in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware through private-pay psychotherapy.
