Despite being one of the greatest sources of joy in our lives, romantic relationships are incredibly hard work. Often, it is those we love most who can become the source of our greatest disagreements, and left unaddressed, these disagreements can grow and fester over time to become one of the greatest sources of pain in our lives. Given the emotionally charged nature of romantic conflicts, couples often don't know how to effectively and respectfully address the constant demands of their relationship. These issues can become overwhelming, and sadly, many loving couples lash out at one another as a result. In some cases, these relationships may, sadly, end. Many couples delay getting therapy to resolve their issues. A belief that couples should be able to "work things out" on their own, combined with a lack of understanding of the nature of couples therapy, unfortunately, delays the process of seeking help and serves to raise the risk of significant damage being done to the relationship.

Many people have lost faith in marriage, given that the most often cited marital statistic is that half of all marriages fail. It is notable that if you are not yet married, there are statistically significant things you can do (and not do) to drop your changes of divorce to around 10%! Once married, marriage counseling often has a low effectiveness rate as well because the average couple comes to counseling about 7 years (!) past when they first needed help. I enjoy using a combination of the Gottman Method, DBT and Choice theory as well as material teaching couples how to "love without fear" and identify their own fears that keep them stuck reacting instead of responding. Couples work almost always points back to individual work so my favorite way to do couples counseling is week on (couples session) week off (each goes to their own individual therapist, all therapists have releases of information to collaborate on care).

Relationships can be confusing, difficult, and create intense feelings within us that are difficult to tolerate. The most common struggle people have in relationships is communicating effectively. This often stems from poor models or lack of guidance on how to understand, tolerate, and express negative or uncomfortable emotions. Over the past 15 years of doing couples work, I have developed an approach that can help both partners feel comfortable, understood, and hopeful. My goal is to help you get to a place where you don't need me anymore and can successfully navigate what arises in your relationship. This often involves healing past hurts and more importantly involves learning effective ways to understand each other and build a strong partnership going forward.
