The majority of therapists receive little to no training on talking about sexuality issues. A lot of couples come in to therapy to talk about their sex life, and spend months on fighting more fairly. Obviously, conflict and connection are two components to address, but sometimes folks get along great and have lost their sexual connection and some folks who fight all the time have a great sex life. Individuals often times want to share their difficulty, weird, or simply amazing sexual encounters with their therapist so they can process the experiences, but feel stifled or embarrassed to bring it up with a therapist who has never seemed open or interested. However, I believe that open dialogue about these topics are important and normal in the therapeutic space. I do my best to make these topics as painless and natural to speak about as possible. Having a graduate certificate in LGBT Health and Policy guides many of my interventions and thoughts about sex and relationships. All I ask is that my patients come with open minds and a willingness to discuss these sometimes challenging topics. We live in a culture that is deeply oppressed around topics of sex, desires, and fetishes. It is my goal to change this by allowing patients to come as they are and speak openly to me about their feelings. Open relationships, polyamory, and ethical non-monogamy have become hot-button topics, but can be deeply misunderstood, and are often viewed as taboo. I understand that not all relationships look the same, and that not all people want the same things. Families look different, and that is something to be celebrated. I am actively staying abreast of the most current research on these topics so that I can help you to navigate their stigma while maintaining the happy, healthy bonds you have with your partners.
