Seattle, Washington therapist: Aaron Kapin, somatic experiencing practitioner
Forgiveness

Aaron Kapin

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
Forgiveness is a loaded word. I'm not interested in telling you who to forgive, or how. But if you find yourself focused on the events surrounding a specific person, there might be some survival energy, emotional or physical, tied into that situation. Using Somatic Experiencing to express and move that survival response so you feel safe again can help you 'un-fixate' from that person...and some may call that forgiveness. I prefer the term 'moving on', but we all have different language for this kind of thing.

Lauren, Simpson

Psychologist, Psy. D, LP, TIYT, CCTP-II
Many individuals who have experienced hurt in a relationship often believe that forgiveness is impossible unless the person who caused the harm acknowledges their actions. However, forgiveness is not about the wrongdoer; rather, it is about empowering the person who was harmed to release the hold that the painful event has on their present life. Importantly, forgiving someone does not require that the person who caused the harm "deserves" forgiveness. Furthermore, forgiveness does not obligate the person who was harmed to maintain or resume a relationship with the individual who hurt them. Instead, forgiveness is a process that allows those affected by harm to reclaim their sense of agency and move forward, independent of the other person's actions or involvement. Through therapy, you can learn to connect to your own hurt with compassion so that you can move forward.

Forgiveness is not about forgetting - it’s about finding freedom from the weight of resentment and hurt. In therapy, we explore what forgiveness truly means for you: how to grieve what was lost, hold boundaries with integrity, and allow compassion to emerge without abandoning yourself. Whether you’re healing after infidelity, betrayal, or relational pain, this work helps restore clarity and steadiness - creating room for trust, grace, and emotional repair to take root again.
