Approach Description: When we work together, you will find me actively engaged in our conversations, asking questions, reflecting what I'm hearing, and trying to make connections or provide new information. While I leave space for you to think and speak at your pace, I'm not a therapist who sits silently and stares. I believe your feedback is very important for the treatment process.
I am an integrative relational psychodynamic therapist. My approach reflects research on attachment and infant development that shows we are social beings whose minds are formed through interaction with caregivers. Through the important relationships in our lives, we develop mental models of other people and ourselves that we are often not even aware of. When we experience harm from other people or from situations, it affects our brains as well as our self-concept and our ability to trust and relate to other people. Therapy helps to heal these wounds through insight and self-compassion, which allows us to try new ways of being in the world, many times by practicing first with the therapist. While my conversation with each patient may sound different, this is always the process I'm working on. I may also draw on methods from cognitive-behavioral or Acceptance and Commitment therapy to actively address unhelpful ways of thinking or develop new coping skills. Throughout this process, I take a relational approach, which means that I reflect on my own contribution to what is happening in the sessions, including the effects of my own biases or personal feelings, and I actively work on repairing ruptures with patients that may occur. In many cases this repair can lead to the biggest breakthroughs as we experience and work through a dynamic that is affecting your personal relationships, in the here and now.

I opened my independent psychology practice in Philadelphia in 2012. I provide therapy to individuals and couples over the age of 18, with a specialty in young adults and university populations (students, faculty, and staff) as well as people who work in the arts and non-profit sectors. At the same time, I enjoy working with people from all backgrounds and walks of life. I have training and experience in culturally-affirming therapy and in working with immigrants and members of minority or oppressed groups. I can be of most help to people with a history of relational trauma such as childhood abuse; depression; anxiety; relationship issues; career concerns; and feelings of loneliness, dissatisfaction, or difficulty adjusting.
