Parents of tweens and teens rarely call because of one clear problem. They call because something shifted, their kid stopped talking, and the house feels tense in a way it did not last year. I work with tweens and teens between 11 and 18 who are anxious, down on themselves, quick to anger, or struggling with friendships, and I work with their parents at the same time. Before joining Evidence Based Psychological Care I spent a year and a half as a school-based therapist, which means I have watched these patterns play out during the school day and not only in a parent's description of them. In session I am active rather than quiet. We name what sets a teen off, we build skills they will use, and we work on what happens at home. I have appointments after school, in the evening, and on Saturday mornings, and I can usually see a new family within the week.

Treatment Approach
- Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
- Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
Approach Description: I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy and DBT skills, and I start from what is already working rather than from what is broken. With this age group that usually means building trust first, since most teens arrive expecting another adult to tell them what to fix. Sessions lean on practical skills, honest conversation, and reflection, at a pace the teen sets, and I bring parents in so the work carries into the week at home.

Evidence Based Psychological Care is a private-pay practice in Calabasas providing therapy and psychological assessment for children, teens, and young adults. The practice was founded by 2 doctoral-level psychologists, Cara Kiff, PhD and Asal Houshiarnejad, PsyD, and it is built around treatments with research behind them rather than a general talk-therapy approach. Janie Venturina, LMFT works with the tween and teen caseload, and she is supervised by the practice's clinical director for therapy.
Our office sits on Calabasas Road with complimentary onsite parking and valet assistance, and we see families from Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Woodland Hills, and Hidden Hills, as well as by telehealth throughout California. We do not bill insurance. We verify each family's out-of-network benefits before the first session, tell them what to expect to pay, and submit their claims on their behalf, so reimbursement does not become one more thing a parent has to manage.
Families usually start with a free 20-minute call with our intake coordinator, who listens to what is happening and helps decide whether therapy, an evaluation, or something else is the right next step. Therapy begins with a 90-minute intake and continues in weekly 45-minute sessions. When an evaluation would answer a question that therapy alone cannot, our assessment team handles it in house, so a family does not have to start over somewhere else.
