Often times, people find that they experience unhappiness, anxiety, or repeated obstacles to getting what they want. This can lead to problems with relationships, work, or other areas of our lives. Through a cooperative, supportive relationship with a therapist you trust and feel comfortable with, you can learn how to cope with what the "universe" throws your way, and choose behaviors and habits that can help you get more of what you want from life. By talking with someone you trust and feel comfortable with, I believe anyone can learn to know themselves better and to live more consciously and deliberately.

Treatment Approach

  • Contemplative Psychotherapy Combines mindfulness and meditation practices with modern psychology. It encourages awareness and compassion as part of the healing process.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
  • Intersubjective Therapy Explores the shared emotional experience between therapist and client. It emphasizes connection and mutual understanding.
  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Object Relations Therapy Focuses on how early caregiver relationships shape current relationships. It aims to improve patterns of attachment and trust.
  • Psychoanalytic Therapy Based on Freud’s theories, it explores unconscious conflicts and past experiences. It seeks to bring hidden issues into awareness.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
Approach Description: Modern psychoanalysts recognize the individuality of each person they work with and adapt their approach to that person's unique needs and stage of growth. At its core, this work is about understanding the unconscious forces that shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors — and using that understanding to help people live more fulfilling lives. By creating a non-judgmental space, the analyst helps people explore feelings, thoughts, and fantasies they may never have put into words before. When all of these inner experiences are welcomed as valuable — rather than dismissed or judged — people can begin to tolerate painful feelings and come to accept the more disturbing, confusing, or even intriguing parts of themselves. Within this safety, a person can begin to examine the sources of their inner conflicts, both intellectually and emotionally. Over time, this opens the door to new ways of responding to old struggles — and to a freer, more conscious way of moving through life.

Jenn Coonce Practice Description
I work with individuals, couples, preteens, teens, and adults, and I have a particular passion for [fill in something personal here]. I offer sessions in Brooklyn, Greenwich Village, and virtually. I am a licensed psychoanalyst and teacher/supervisor of psychoanalysis in New York State, having received my Certification from the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, where I am a faculty member and Board member. Psychoanalysis is a depth-oriented approach that goes beyond symptom management — it helps you understand the deeper patterns and feelings driving your experience, so that change is lasting, not just surface-level. I aim to provide supportive environment that is tailored to the individual. I see patients who experience anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and other forms of unhappiness that can get in the way of getting what you want. I have had success with teens, adults, and couples.
