This practice has two therapist available, Cathy L. McGinnis, LCSW and Lori Coplen, LMSW.
Cathy has 34 years of experience, with 22 of these years being in private practice. Cathy is also a Registered Play Therapist through the Association for Play Therapy. She sees children as young as 3 years of age. Play Therapy is a wonderful approach to working with children who do not yet have the verbal skills to express themselves. Play is the "language of the child" and Play Therapy allows children to work through their issues in a non-threatening environment. Registered Play Therapists are licensed practitioners with a master's or higher mental health degree, 150+ hours of specialized Play Therapy training, substantial clinical and play therapy experience and supervision and at least 36 hours of continuing education during a 3 year renewal cycle. Cathy also utilizes Animal Assisted Therapy. Studies show that animals soothe and comfort humans in times of stress. Our patients look forward to visiting with Atticus, a non-allergenic Bichon Poodle mix, and Scout (cat). We have no problem separating the animals from patients if requested. Cathy works with adults in regard to depression, relationship issues, divorce, parenting, low self-esteem and other personal psycho-social issues.
Lori has 13+ years of experience working with children and families. Lori is presently working on her LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and Cathy is her supervisor. Lori utilizes Play Therapy techniques when working with young children, however, she is not yet a Registered Play Therapist through the Association for Play Therapy.
