Ellen Ronka (She/Her)

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, LCMHC
I specialize in resolving chronic pain, fatigue, and other medically unresolved health problems. I am exceptionally empathic, intuitive, and sensitive while also being highly analytical, practical and goal-oriented. My clients often remark how much they appreciate my directness (while still being gentle and compassionate), and directive (while still being flexible as to how they want to use their sessions). My clients feel deeply seen by me; all of my therapy techniques are undergirded by a practice of genuine caring attunement which I believe is healing in itself. I combine years of experience treating trauma, a deep understanding of spirituality, a practiced sensitivity to energy, and the most current neuroscience-informed strategies to facilitate profound and lasting mindbody healing.

Approach Description: I use an eclectic assortment of modalities in treatment. In general, I operate with a psychodynamic lens, which means that I believe that your current experience is largely shaped by experiences in your earliest years, especially in regard to your primary caregivers. While I think it is helpful to gain insight as to the unconscious motivations behind your current dysfunctional patterns (insight-oriented talk therapy), I also believe it can be useful to examine and change the interplay between your thoughts, feelings, and behavior (cognitive-behavioral therapy) as well as pay close attention to the experience you have in your body since it often reflects unresolved emotions and experiences (body-oriented and trauma-focused therapy). I also think it can be helpful for a client to experiment with different physical postures and role-play with me different ways of relating as this can often cause profound shifts in the mind and emotions (experiential therapy). I like to teach clients information and skills that empower their personal growth process, including such areas as boundaries, assertiveness, meditation, relaxation, and journaling techniques (psycho-educational therapy). When appropriate, I may brainstorm solutions to problems with you and I may teach you techniques to address problem areas in your life (solutions-focused therapy). I have Level II training in a technique called EMDR; it helps clients process and heal from the effects of traumatic memories by using bilateral alternating stimuli, usually eye movements. (You can read about EMDR at emdr.com.) I specialize in using energy psychology methods, which are body-oriented alternative healing techniques. Like EMDR, they tend to be much more efficient than talk therapy at resolving symptoms of distress (such as anxiety and depression) and the long-held patterns in the unconscious mind that cause them. (You can read about energy psychology at energypsych.org) Lastly, I have extensive training in the mindbody model for healing from chronic pain, including Alan Gordon’s Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT). I vary the use of all of these approaches, depending on what I believe a client needs. You always have the right to discuss with me in more detail my choice of treatment approaches and philosophies, as well as my training, experience, and credentials, and I encourage you to do so.

Ellen Ronka Practice Description
I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with 20 years’ experience and an intense passion for relieving the suffering of adults with medically unresolved health problems. If you have exhausted your options for treatment of pain, fatigue, and other chronic health problems, I can probably help you heal (not just cope!). My method and model are based in the latest science about the nature and cause of chronic health problems, but you are unlikely to hear about them from conventional (or even alternative) healthcare providers who are working from an older, inaccurate paradigm for what generates chronic pain. I treat more than just pain because the underlying process is the same with other chronic health symptoms. So, in addition to pain in one or more specific body part, Fibromyalgia, Migraine, and Phantom Limb Pain, I have treated clients with the following conditions: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lyme Disease (as well as the other tick-born co-infections), Long Covid, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, food allergies, insomnia, and many other sensations like burning, tingling, numbness, dizziness/vertigo, shaking/tremors, tinnitus, and nausea. Most therapists understand that stress and trauma are highly correlated with chronic health problems, but they have not been trained in how to treat the actual pain. I have done trainings from three different organizations, all leaders in the field of mindbody healing for chronic pain: The Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS), Alan Gordon's Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)**, and the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association (PPDA). Because chronic pain is learned (unconsciously, of course!), it is important that treatment addresses the process of neuroplasticity as it applies to symptoms. This involves retraining conditioned responses that activate symptoms, thereby unlearning them. I use very specific techniques to do this with all my clients. Understanding pain science is also crucial for this process, and I provide extensive resources for that purpose. My Minding-The-Body Healing Group is a very efficient and cost-effective method for doing the above. It teaches participants the basics of pain science and the tools to resolve their chronic symptoms, all while decreasing their isolation and providing a valuable source of support and camaraderie with others suffering the same way. The feedback I get about it is incredible! It is an 8-week online psychoeducational group that includes 12 hours of group time with the option to extend for continued support. Included in the cost of participation is access to me between sessions for guidance on how to apply the tools. I hope you’ll check out my website for more details about it. Because many mental health problems contribute to pain, it is very important to address anxiety, depression, insomnia, and especially trauma. This makes stress reduction, processing stuck emotions, and healing shame-based beliefs key to resolving chronic pain. I offer individual therapy for this; I use many body-oriented techniques including EMDR and Energy Psychology* which resolve the root causes of pain much more quickly than talk therapy. For those who are already established with a different psychotherapist, I offer pain coaching to augment that work. I provide guidance on how to retrain your brain out of pain and make intuitive suggestions for which emotional themes to address with your current therapist to relieve your symptoms. In addition to my 20 years of training and experience as psychotherapist, I have the personal experience of healing myself of a vast array of chronic health problems! That means I have the strong conviction that this model works! I also know well the courage and perseverance it requires. And lastly, I know the uncertainty, fear, shame, frustration, despair, and financial and relational strain that come with chronic health problems. I’m ready to help you with all of it. I am very holistically minded and intuitive. I infuse all of my work with the principles of mindfulness and latest research on neuroplasticity. I teach my clients stress-management skills such as meditation, relaxation exercises, and visualization. I have read extensively on spirituality and suffering and am happy to integrate this into the therapy for those interested. I offer couples therapy for those whose relationships have been strained by the impact of chronic pain, fatigue or illness. I also do couples therapy for non-pain related issues – I delight in helping clients build deeper intimacy in their relationships. My practice is 100% telehealth with adults aged 28 and up (25 for groups). Because of licensing laws, I am able to serve clients who are in the states of NH, AZ, and FL. This does not require you to be a resident of one of those states, only that you are physically located in one of them at the time of our meetings. *energypsych.org **painreprocessingtherapy.com
