Life is tough. If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or out of rhythm by the complexity and challenges life may present; I can and will help you. My name is Damon Neely. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and veteran who is most passionate about helping men navigate the challenges of 21st century manhood. I specialize in working with young-adult and middle-aged men struggling with anxiety and depressive symptoms related to past, present, and future stressors, or events. I left the managed care industry after six years to pursue a full-time career in mental health counseling. My pursuit in growing my practice has fulfilled my lifelong desire to help others. I had a desire to make an impact helping others from early childhood. I was the youngest of seven children and I believe that through that experience I developed the power of observation and curiosity. Those traits are fundamental to being a good therapist as well as a good client. I have an existential focus in my practice that presumes that all individuals seek meaning, purpose, and self-actualization. I believe that anxiety and depression are symptoms that derive from a lack of meaning and purpose. I address men’s issues including perfectionism, unrealistic expectations, feelings of failure, low self-worth, self-acceptance, values towards life decisions, relational issues towards spouse/partner, social skills, anger management, emotional regulation, role specification, fatherhood, meaning/purpose, and identity. Moreover, I am a prior service veteran and I enjoy collaborating with veterans as they transition and adjust to civilian life. My integrative approach is designed to help you achieve your goals/objectives and shine insight onto whatever issues are troubling you. Ultimately, I believe you are on a journey towards, self-compassion, self-acceptance, self-worth, and authenticity. Even though I am trained in several theoretical orientation, my best traits include empathy, compassion, and being non-judgmental.

Therapy Sessions Join the Rebellion (JTR23 Inc) Practice Description
The counseling process is about me developing rapport with you. First and foremost, I believe that building trust and creating a safe, non-judgmental space for you to explore issues and gain insight is fundamental. These factors are essential to the therapeutic process and without them the process will not work. I am here to guide and join you along your personal quest to authenticity and self-actualization. The aim of therapy is to clarify your needs and as a team we will create a plan with action oriented goals that ameliorate your presenting issues. What counseling is not is me providing you the answers or “fixing” you. It is not about fixing you, rather helping you uncover the means in which to change. I will invest myself totally and my hope is that you do the same. Ultimately, I hope when our time together is finished, you will continue on your path with more self-awareness and clarity. You may come to therapy for a myriad of issues. Life is tough, it’s complex and you may need assistance negotiating life’s struggles. You are seeking a safe, confidential space in which to express yourself without worrying about being judged. In this space, you can address the issues that are confusing and creating stress in your life. Therapy is not just something for individuals with severe mental health issues. Therapy can be a good tool to assist you if you are conflicted or overwhelmed by life’s circumstances. Therapy can address and help resolve various problems such as depression, stress, anxiety, relationship issues, and/or adjusting to changes during significant life events. I use an eclectic and integrated approach borrowing techniques from person centered, psychodynamic, solution focused, narrative, cognitive, and existential psychotherapy. In addition, I explore concepts from Bowen family system related to family systems. The techniques I have been trained in are grounded in research and evidenced based. Ultimately, however technique/theories are subordinate to our relationship which is my utmost priority in developing with you. Moreover, genuineness, empathy, and being non-judgmental are essential to our counseling relationship. It is my aim to provide you a safe space to come forth and explore what is challenging you. I like to focus on issues fundamental to the core human condition such as anxiety, meaning making, purpose, freedom, responsibility, self-actualization, self-worth, guilt and acceptance. Analysis of these conditions/concepts during our session brings insight which is the key to change. Insight uncovers blind spots, which once uncovered allows the development of willpower necessary to comprise solutions needed for desired change. I believe people strive for self-actualization, authenticity, and potentialities so the goal of therapy is to empower as to not create dependency. Other aims of the therapeutic process are to remove or negotiate obstacles that impede self-actualization and increase congruence between the real and perceived self. Anxieties stem from consequences of inevitable life conditions. Awareness and self-determination are major goals for change. Accepting core human conditions can bring about the awareness necessary for change. You can take control, create meaning, and confront life’s challenges to make sense and meaning of your world. My job is to help you discover those meanings and stand beside you as you confront the aforementioned challenges. One way I help you make these discoveries is to hear your story and help you create solution focused/action oriented goals. I believe people make sense of their life through narratives. They are defined through the stories they share; to understand the individual is to comprehend their perspectives of past, present, and future. I will assist you in changing perspectives if needed and help to increase your ability to re-author your life. We cannot escape the fact that we are socially constructed and products of environmental & family systems, however, once we have determined how these realities have influenced our personality and psyche, we can begin to truly relate to those systems and begin to strive for individuation and a more balanced collaboration between all relations whether self-others-systems. I want to hear your story and gain insight into who you are, what you believe, and what you value. I truly believe that you have the power to re-author your story if you feel it got off-track. You always have the ability to reinvent yourself and engage in your own existential makeover. I will be your guide on your quest to make changes and I walk next to you as you take on whatever challenges you must face. True change originates from the individual.
