Michigan EMDR Therapy - Rachel Kornilakis Practice Description
EMDR is a central approach used to help the brain process experiences that may still be shaping your emotional responses today. Many people come in feeling stuck in patterns they understand logically but still cannot shift emotionally. This work is designed to help bridge that gap. A lot of emotional pain does not come from one obvious event but from experiences that were overwhelming, confusing, or never fully processed. These invisible emotional wounds can show up in many ways. Anxiety that feels out of proportion to the present moment. Reactivity in relationships that feels hard to control. Numbness, shutdown, or a sense of being disconnected from yourself. A constant feeling of being on edge or not fully safe even when life looks stable from the outside. EMDR therapy helps target these stuck experiences directly. Instead of only talking about what happened, EMDR works with how the nervous system has stored those experiences. Through a structured process, the brain is supported in reprocessing memories so they are no longer triggering in the same way. The goal is not to erase the past, but to change how it lives in your body and mind today. As these experiences are processed, many clients notice that the emotional intensity begins to shift. Memories may still be there, but they no longer feel as sharp, overwhelming, or present. Reactions in daily life often start to feel more manageable. There is more space to pause, think, and respond rather than react. This work is also about integration. Parts work, CBT, and DBT informed strategies may be used alongside EMDR to help support emotional regulation, strengthen coping skills, and build awareness of internal patterns. The goal is not only to process the past, but to help you function and feel more grounded in the present. There is an understanding here that healing does not mean becoming untouched by life or forgetting what has happened. The reality is that meaningful experiences leave a mark. However, those marks do not have to remain open and painful. We cannot change the things that happened, but we can change the impact they are having on us and how we carry them. Therapy is a space to slow down and notice what has been running in the background for a long time. Many people have spent years managing, coping, and pushing through without ever having the chance to fully process what they have been carrying. This is where EMDR becomes especially important. It allows the brain and body to complete processing that may have been interrupted by stress, overwhelm, or lack of support at the time the experiences occurred. Treatment is collaborative and paced to your readiness. There is no expectation to go faster than feels safe or manageable. Stability and trust come first, and the work is adjusted to meet you where you are. Some sessions may focus on building skills and regulation. Others may focus directly on EMDR processing when you are ready. Over time, the goal is not just symptom reduction, but a shift in how you relate to your past and to yourself. Old experiences may still be remembered, but they do not have to continue driving your emotional responses or limiting your relationships. There can be more clarity, more choice, and more space between what you feel and how you respond. We cannot change the things that happened, but we can change the impact they are having on us and how we carry them. Taking the first step can feel difficult, especially when you have been managing things on your own for a long time. Reaching out is often the beginning of shifting from coping to actually healing, and support is available when you are ready to begin.
