Treatment Approach

  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Christian Counseling Blends psychological practices with Christian values and scripture. It provides faith-based support for life challenges and spiritual growth.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy Based on decades of research, this method gives couples tools to improve communication, manage conflict, and strengthen intimacy.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Play Therapy Uses toys, games, and creative play to help children express emotions. It is especially useful when children can’t fully verbalize their feelings.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Sandplay Therapy Uses sand trays and miniature figures to allow symbolic expression. It is especially helpful for children and trauma survivors.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.

  • Online Therapy Details: Many of our clients are relying on our services being delivered via Telehealth during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Recently; there have been various articles surrounding security and privacy concerns with certain platforms being used for Telehealth Counseling. Many rules and regulations have been relaxed to allow healthcare providers to use various methods of delivering services during this time. However; this has come with some unintended consequences related to privacy and security. In light of recent security grievances against various teleconferencing applications, we wanted to assure you that all providers at our practice use Telehealth by SimplePractice. This platform is not powered by Zoom or a variety of other platforms that were not originally intended to be used by Mental Health Professionals. We take our clients’ security and privacy seriously and after reaching out to learn more about the security features of our platform we were provided with the following information: “Telehealth by SimplePractice is powered by Vonage/TokBox, a leading video technology company that works with some of the largest and best-in-class companies in healthcare, banking, and the education space. This platform is HIPAA-compliant, has a BAA, and offers the most advanced security and technology policies. The entire SimplePractice platform, including Telehealth, is developed in a secure and compliant manner that meets administrative, technical, and physical control requirements defined to meet HIPAA requirements. The information security and compliance program is derived from HIPAA, HITRUST, PCI, ISO 27001/2, and NIST CSF frameworks. The SimplePractice application, including the Telehealth feature, is encrypted both at rest and in transit using industry-recognized best practices that go above and beyond compliance requirements. Finally, SimplePractice has a partnership with The Telebehavioral Health Institute. The Telebehavioral Health Institute holds a high criteria with whom they partner.” We hope this information helps you feel more confident and secure as we continue to offer video appointments to all of our existing and new clients. Resilience Counseling & Social Skills Center Practice Description
At Resilience Counseling & Social Skills Center we have a team of over 40 clinicians that provide high quality counseling, psychotherapy and mental health services to children, teens and adults. We provide services to all individuals residing in Virginia via telehealth and in-person. We have physical office locations in Glen Allen (Richmond), Virginia. Our Glen Allen office is easily accessible for residents of Henrico, Chesterfield, Short Pump and Midlothian. We have an additional office location in Fredericksburg, Virginia. That office is easily accessible to residents of Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Orange, Caroline and Fredericksburg City. We were founded on the principle that all individuals will face challenges in life, and we all posses the ability to overcome them. However, sometimes circumstances can feel overwhelming and we struggle to manage the realities of everyday life. This is when feelings of depression, anxiety and hopelessness can begin to dominate our daily reality. The good news is, by combining scientifically proven methods, you can build the resilience skills necessary to thrive, no matter what circumstances you face. Karl G. Memmer, LPC is the owner of Resilience Counseling & Social Skills Center. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia and a Nationally Certified Counselor. He began the practice with several goals in mind. 1. Increase access to outpatient mental health services in the communities we serve by accepting most insurance plans, including most medicaid policies. We have further expanded our service area by making therapy accessible to anyone in Virginia via Telehealth. 2. Be Responsive: We know that when you reach out to us it is an act of courage. It can be very defeating when a practice does not return your call for weeks, or when they do inform you that they are not taking new clients for months or they do not accept any form of insurance. We pride ourselves on having a friendly, welcoming and supportive scheduling staff to put your mind at ease. Even if we can not help we will provide you with resources so you are not left feeling alone. 3. Provide High Quality Services: Our practice currently employs over 40 clinicians. We pride ourselves on having a diverse team of clinicians with varying backgrounds, skills sets, and specialties to enhance the therapeutic relationship. This is a very important factor for engaging in successful therapy. 4. Be accountable: Therapy can be a major investment. If you feel like you are unhappy with our services we are always open to feedback. With a team of 40 clinicians, sometimes the initial fit is not a good one and we can quickly get you scheduled with another provider that may be a better fit for your needs. 5. Be efficient: We utilize a secure electronic client management system complete with your own client portal. Your intake documents are all paperless and streamlined. You can also view invoices, track appointments and launch your telehealth session all in one place. No need to use multiple programs or sort through cumbersome paper-based documents to get started.
