Trauma and PTSD

Trauma and PTSD therapy is a form of therapy that helps people who have experienced a traumatic event or a series of traumatic events in their lives. Trauma can be any event that causes intense fear, horror, or helplessness, such as abuse, violence, accidents, natural disasters, war, etc. Trauma can have lasting effects on the psychological and physical health of the survivors, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex PTSD (C-PTSD). PTSD and C-PTSD are conditions that involve symptoms such as re-experiencing the trauma, avoiding reminders of the trauma, negative changes in mood and cognition, and increased arousal and reactivity. Before starting therapy or in the process of starting work with a psychotherapist, you can also undergo additional diagnostics by a psychiatrist. For diagnosing PTSD, C-PTSD, or personality disorder. This can help in choosing the approach that is best suited for your condition. For clinical PTSD and C-PTSD, the format of Prolonged Exposure (PE) may be suitable. This is a short-term, structured method of work aimed at working with PTSD. It helps survivors gradually confront the traumatic memories and situations that cause fear and distress. It helps survivors reduce their symptoms and regain control over their lives. The recommended format of meetings for Prolonged Exposure is 90 minutes, instead of the standard 50 minutes. If you have been diagnosed with a personality disorder (which can develop as a reaction to permanent stress in childhood or experience of abusive relationships in childhood). Or there are some personality traits that interfere with your life and you think they developed as a reaction to childhood trauma. Schema therapy may suit you more. This is a long-term therapeutic approach that helps change personality traits that have formed as a reaction to traumatic developmental experience. Such personality traits could be useful to you in childhood or adolescence; as a way to survive and cope with stress. But in adulthood, these habitual patterns can act destructively. And require long-term and thorough work. If you are interested in trauma and PTSD therapy, please contact me for more information and consultation. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are unfortunately way more common than many people think. A strong link has been found my many studies between ACEs and physical and mental health problems in later life. Traumatic experiences can also take place in adolescence and adulthood. For some, the impact is greatly distressing and life-limiting, such as in the cases of having post-traumatic-stress disorder. Many of the people I have come to work with have lived through often multiple adversities and traumatic experiences, throughout their lives. I offer a confidential space where we can think together about the way such experiences have affected you and the parts of you that can change and develop in order to integrate and move on from past traumas.

Trauma and PTSD are more common than many people think. Terrifying events like accidents or war can cause this. Sexual or emotional abuse are a common causes. It can be a single event or something ongoing over many years to the point that is feels like a normality in which you are trapped. Many victims feel guilt and shame. Some memories are completely blanked out by the brain for many years and come back suddenly, triggered by something, or slowly, sometimes in caareful therapy. Symptoms can be dissociation (part of you goes away), flashbacks (intrusive memories),repeated nightmares, numbness and/or increased anxiety, avoidance (f.ex. of sex, relationships), negative thoughts and moods and altered physical and emotional reactions and behavior.. If you have encountered this and think you may be affected please get help. It is understandable that you don’t feel like dealing with it and want to just push it aside and have nothing to do with it ever again, but if this hasn’t worked too well and it burdens areas of your life like your sex life and your relationship, it is advisable to address this in therapy. You can get help and heal.
