Does this sound familiar? You struggle with negative thoughts about your body, basing your worth on your appearance, obsessing about your weight and shape, and constantly comparing yourself to others. Your self-esteem is tied to the number on your scale. You may even find that your relationships and ability to enjoy life are suffering. You may avoid wearing certain kinds of clothes, being in photos, attending social events, swimming, pursuing hobbies, or trying new things. Deep down, you yearn for a more peaceful, connected and fulfilling life where your time and energy are focused on the things that truly matter to you. With Health at Every Size (HAES), Intuitive Eating (IE), Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), and other evidence-based approaches, I will help you cultivate self-worth and body respect so you can be kind to yourself and redirect your energy to what fills you with purpose and joy. I specialize in working with individuals who struggle with negative body image and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).

Body Image issue may be a sign of an eating disorder. Some symptoms of an eating disorder are if your teen begins to eat healthy, cutting out certain food groups that are “bad” or “unhealthy,” deciding to be a vegetarian or vegan but taking it to an extreme. You may notice your teen pushing food around their plate but not eating it, developing excessive rules around food that seems above and beyond those of a typical teen. At Campbell Teen & Family Therapy, we offer treatment for all eating disorders. Our philosophy is that it takes a team. This team consists of the family, the therapist, the primary care doctor and a dietitian. We partner with Bay Area Nutrition, to make access to dietitian services easy and convenient, they are located next door to us! We allow our patients to use whichever medical doctor they are comfortable with. If your doctor is not an eating disorder specialist and you cannot get into an eating disorder specialist doctor due to wait lists, then we can help to coach your doctor on the tests needed to assess for an eating disorder and on what our program requires for medical monitoring.

We all hear a duality of messages: Criticize your body: Accept you body. We all walk this line yet it's normal to intellectually know something is not right but to embody acceptance of oneself is also possible with support.

We are born happy in our own skin. As kids, we are curious about our bodies and enjoy exploring them. Then something goes wrong. A well-meaning parent suggests we skip dessert, and the dolls we play with are so anatomically inaccurate they would fall over if they were humans. Then we start to attend school and become more aware of the larger culture. We notice only certain types of bodies are portrayed in the media. Our peers and our social media tell us we should look a particular way. This story may sound familiar, and sadly, it’s a common one. Unfortunately, for so many of us, the dissatisfaction with our bodies starts when we are young and persists for many years, particularly if we don’t start to examine how we think. Together, through radical self-acceptance, fat positivity, and the anti-diet framework we can begin to work toward healing.
