Depression

Chris Tickner

Marriage and Family Therapist, PhD, MFT
Depression is normal. We all get depressed. It's our body's way of saying something is wrong. We're either living with something that no longer serves us, or we're yearning for something that has been missing. For a long time now, the psychology and psychiatric communities have treated depression as something to get rid of, something to treat. And while nobody wants to be depressed, efforts to get rid of it, or diminish its symptoms, tend to make things worse. Luckily, there are new and much more effective ways to work with depression. Therapies that include the body (somatic psychology), mindfulness (MBSR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and neuro-science have a much better success rate in treating depression. When we approach depression as a messenger and listen to what it is telling us, it tends to go away! So, what is your depression telling you? What is in your life that shouldn't be? What is missing? For over 25 years I have been helping my clients overcome depression blending the best from the worlds of somatic psychology, mindfulness, and neuroscience.

Although historically I have helped people with severe Depression, my current practice tends to help people overcome more moderate levels of Depression, or at least Depressions that are in at least partial remission. In many ways this relates to my practice being conducted online. In general, I use a biopsychosocial model in how I approach helping people to gain mastery over Depression. I try to help my clients to replace patterns that increase Depression with patterns that will counteract it related to their thoughts, feelings, behavior, relationships, and context. Toward this end, I support my Depressed clients in evaluating how they are doing in each of these areas, to consider the results they are getting with the strategies they are using in each of these areas and then to find alternatives that will serve them better. One guiding premise I use is that Depression focuses on the past. So, much of what I strive to assist Depressed clients in doing is to shift to considering what they would ideally like in the future and then to assist them in moving toward that future collaboratively. As with other areas, the specific techniques and strategies used will vary for each client, and most often a combination of interventions are used in a sequence based upon the particular needs and preference of each particular client.

With a blend of warmth and expertise in depression, I employ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address unhealthy thinking patterns related to depression. Mindfulness techniques are woven into our sessions to promote relaxation, fostering a sense of calm amidst life's challenges. Drawing from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), we collaboratively work on recreating a positive self-narrative and building skills to combat depression. Emphasizing self-care, I guide you in cultivating habits that contribute to your overall well-being.
