Sexual Abuse

Registered Psychotherapist, MD, CORST
If you have or are experiencing sexual abuse, it is very important to get help. You need to get out of this situation and/ or heal from the damage done. People that were sexually abused may be traumatized and suffer from dissociation (part of you goes away), flashbacks (images and/or physical and emotional reactions are triggered involuntarily) and other symptoms that can make your life difficult and hinder you to experience positive sexual encounters. This affects you and your relationships and can be helped. Don’t hesitate, especially if this is ongoing. Get help quickly and start your better life. If you are a person who abuses a child or any other person, part of you may justify this with different excuses and even claim it wasn’t abuse. If there is a part, maybe the best in you, that knows what you are doing is not ok, then get help as soon as possible. Change is possible, also for you.

Sexual violence is a traumatic event that can have lasting effects on the psychological and physical health of the survivors. It can cause a range of problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), low self-esteem, guilt, avoidance, and others. Therapy can help survivors cope with their trauma and heal from its impact. I work with this topic in two formats. 1. If sexual violence has triggered PTSD. The diagnosis of PTSD must be made by a psychiatrist. I work with PTSD in the protocol of Prolonged Exposure (PE). PE is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that involves gradually confronting the traumatic memories and situations that cause fear and distress. It helps survivors reduce their symptoms and regain control over their lives. WARNING: Sessions in PE format last 90 minutes (instead of the standard 50). 2. If sexual violence has not triggered PTSD, but has formed such psychological problems as low self-esteem, guilt, avoidance, and others. I work with this topic in the format of schema therapy techniques. Schema therapy is a form of integrative therapy that combines cognitive, behavioral, experiential, and interpersonal approaches. It helps survivors identify and modify their maladaptive schemas, which are deep-rooted beliefs and patterns that affect their emotions and behaviors. It also helps survivors develop healthy coping skills and meet their emotional needs.
