Stress really depends on how you look at it. Some amount of stress is a required part of being human—literally, if you never felt stressed, you would wonder if you were alive. Too much stress or unrelenting chronic stress, though, will literally kill you. Your body is designed to get stressed to deal with an urgent threat, and then shift into rest and recovery mode. If you stay in a high stress state perpetually, it will lead to major health problems, like diabetes or heart disease.
