Personality Disorders

Dmitry Shuldeshov

Counselor/Therapist
Personality disorders are intertwined with the very structure of personality, and are not tracked as well subjectively as some other conditions. Such as, for example, depression, relationship problems or career issues. This causes the impossibility, even, to determine that something is wrong. A person may have problems with relationships with others, problems at work, constant background stress. But the person may not even realize that something is wrong. The most frequent clients of psychotherapy are people with borderline personality disorder. Because, tendencies to acute emotional states, self-harm behavior, depression are more associated with the needs for help from mental health professionals. Unfortunately, people with avoidant personality disorder, paranoid, narcissistic, antisocial and others do not become clients of psychotherapy so often. Each category has its own reason. For example, people with paranoid personality disorder may have beliefs that psychological health is an area of manipulation and deception. People with schizoid personality disorder may not want to enter into contact with another paradigm that may differ radically from their own. And people with narcissistic personality disorder (although they are more likely than others to seek help; because it can show them as developed and conscious personalities) may not want to admit their "wrongness" and vulnerability. Although psychotherapy for personality disorders works very well for people with borderline personality disorder, people with other types of personality disorders, unfortunately, do not know that thanks to therapy they can significantly improve the quality of their life. I have been working in schema therapy for several years - a CBT approach of the third wave. This approach was specially developed for the therapy of people with personality disorders. And showed its effectiveness with such a disorder as antisocial personality disorder. Which used to be considered untreatable. When you turn to a therapist for personality disorder therapy, please be prepared for the fact that this is a very long process of work. It can take from 1 to 3 years of work. Do not be afraid to turn to therapy if you have a personality disorder. In schema therapy for personality disorders, a very gentle, and at the same time, structured and understandable process of work is used.
