Barbara Freedman
Licensed Mental Health Counsellor
I have successfully worked with well over one hundred Victim Service clients as a Mental Health Worker /Counsellor. Most of these clients were victims of domestic violence. Leaving such a relationship often involves a mourning process. I have provided safety, along with education and awareness involving the difficulties in leaving such a relationship.
Many victims of domestic violence are in denial or do not recognize the behavior as abuse , as normal is what we live. These challenges involve perceived or real fear of retaliation or further harm, in addition to the economic reasons of financial or housing dependence on the abuser. Self blame particularly cultural or family pressures leads to internalized oppression and discourages speaking out. Their fear of not being. believed or being judged is among the most common reason that victims suffer in silence. For those sustaining the pain of domestic abuse I provide an understanding of this process in addition to offering these clients ,guidance, resources as well as the self agency to be able to achieve freedom from this mistreatment.

Montreal's bilingual, bicultural identity shapes its therapy landscape, with many therapists offering services in both French and English to serve the city's English-speaking communities alongside Quebec's Francophone majority. The city's large student population across McGill, Concordia, and Université de Montréal generates consistent demand for therapists addressing academic stress, young adult transitions, and identity. Montreal's arts and creative sector also sustains demand for therapists who understand the pressures of creative careers, financial precarity, and performance anxiety. The Douglas Mental Health University Institute provides major institutional mental health research and care, complemented by the city's extensive private and CLSC-based therapy network.
