Ryan Shannon
Counselor/Therapist, LMHCA, MA, MS
Stress is an unavoidable part of life, but it can become difficult to manage when your body and mind stay in a constant state of alert. You may feel tense, irritable, exhausted, distracted, emotionally reactive, or unable to relax even after the immediate stressor has passed.
My approach is both insight-oriented and practical. Drawing from Adlerian and psychodynamic therapy, we may explore how early experiences, family roles, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or beliefs about responsibility and success influence the way you respond to pressure. Sometimes current stress is intensified by older patterns, such as feeling that you must handle everything alone, avoid disappointing others, or remain productive at all times.
I also use CBT to help you identify unhelpful thinking patterns, reframe stressful situations, and separate genuine problems from catastrophic predictions. Solution-focused therapy can help us clarify what is within your control and identify realistic steps toward improving the situation.
Because stress is also physiological, we may use tools that help calm the nervous system. These can include mindfulness, guided imagery, breathing and relaxation exercises, and autogenic training, a form of self-hypnosis that uses calming mental cues and body awareness to promote relaxation.
When appropriate, I may suggest practical missions between sessions, such as setting a boundary, asking for support, changing an overwhelming routine, taking intentional breaks, or practicing a relaxation technique during moments of pressure.
My goal is not to remove every stressor from your life. It is to help you understand your stress response, recover more effectively, and face demanding situations with greater calm, flexibility, and confidence.

Exploring work burnout, relationship conflict, unresolved trauma, or life transitions can be the first step towards understanding what is actually driving your stress. During sessions, you will be introduced to relaxation and breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and journaling to help you to manage upsetting situations in the moment. We can also explore realistic and sustainable self-care routines.
