Anger is a natural emotion—but when it feels uncontrollable, it can hurt you and those you care about. Together, we’ll explore what’s beneath the anger, learn healthy expression, and develop tools to manage it with awareness and self-compassion. I believe that all of our emotions can serve as guideposts to help us navigate the world. When working with anger management issues, I support clients to understand and accept their anger and other emotions. I believe that anger can help motivate us to set boundaries and work for justice in the broader world when it is appropriately expressed to appropriate people.

Seattle, Washington therapist: Aaron Kapin, somatic experiencing practitioner
Anger Management

Aaron Kapin

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
While there are often mental components to anger you'll want to address with a talk therapist, there's also a physical component that we can work on using somatic approaches: Out of control anger is often your nervous system's "fight" response kicking in so intensely that it's hard to keep your cool. Anger serves an important purpose, but we want to know that we can still stay connected to our best selves even while we are angry. We can use body-focused techniques to be able to recognize when anger is about to kick in, and to teach your body new ways of responding to that anger. For example, you may find yourself saying to me "I noticed I was getting hot and agitated, so I excused myself for a couple minutes." You may find yourself able to focus your energy much more quickly than you used to, to come back focused and goal oriented. You may still feel 'mad' but it may be anger that is working for you, in alignment with your values.
