You may look successful on the outside while feeling anxious, stuck, or disconnected underneath. I work with high-functioning adults dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and identity questions who want more than quick coping strategies—they want to understand themselves at a deeper level. My approach is insight-oriented and relational, helping you recognize emotional patterns and relational dynamics so you can live with greater clarity, freedom, and intention.

Client Focus

Session Format: Individual sessions.
Age Specialty: Adult
Demographic Expertise: LGBTQ+ clients.

Treatment Approach

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) An evidence-based treatment for PTSD that teaches clients to reframe unhelpful thoughts about trauma. It helps reduce guilt, shame, and fear.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
Approach Description: My approach is insight-oriented and relational. We look at recurring emotional patterns, attachment dynamics, and early experiences that shape your current relationships and sense of self. As you understand these patterns, you gain more choice, emotional steadiness, and freedom in how you respond to life. I integrate psychodynamic and attachment-based work with practical tools when helpful. Therapy with me is collaborative and grounded—we move at a thoughtful pace and pay attention to both your inner world and what unfolds between us in the room. The goal is not just symptom relief, but deeper self-understanding and lasting change.

John W Wilson Practice Description
Many of the people I work with are high-functioning on the outside but feel stuck, anxious, or disconnected underneath. They’re not looking for quick fixes—they want to understand the deeper patterns shaping their relationships, identity, and emotional life. I specialize in mood concerns, relationship issues, and sexual identity, using a relational, insight-oriented approach that focuses on lasting change rather than symptom management. Therapy with me is collaborative and thoughtful. We slow down, pay attention to what’s happening in your life and in the therapy relationship, and work toward greater self-awareness, emotional steadiness, and more authentic connections. I’ve taught psychology at Atlanta-area universities, lecture at Emory, and maintain a 4.9-star Healthgrades rating. If you’re ready to understand yourself more fully and live with greater intention, I welcome the conversation.
