Approach Description: Person-centered therapy, also known as Rogerian therapy or client-based therapy, is a type of non-directive therapy that allows clients to take more of a lead in sessions such that, in the process, they discover their own solutions that are unique of their own world, as well as the ability to manage and trust it. In person-centered therapy, the counselor provides compassionate facilitation, listening without condemnation or judgment and acknowledging the client’s experience without shifting the conversation in another direction. The counselor is there to encourage and support the client without interrupting or interfering with their process of self-discovery, as they uncover what hurts and what is needed to repair it. Person-centered therapy assists with various types of mental distress including anxiety, depression, and grief. Individuals/groups benefit in seeking tremendous self-confidence, a powerful sense of identity authenticity, greater success in establishing interpersonal relationships as well as more trust in their own decisions. The approach, alone or in combination with other types of therapy, can assist those addressing anxiety, depression as well as grief or other difficult circumstances, such as abuse, breakups, professional anxiety, or family stressors. Since the client must take initiative in person-centered therapy, those who are more motivated are likely to be more successful.
