Growing up in a less than nurturing environment can lead to all sorts of codependent traits: self esteem, self care, boundaries, controlling others, taking care of your adult needs, perfectionism, emotional flooding. I am well versed in the 12-step program of codependents anonymous and the issues that are helped through attending. I recommend the program, but it is not required to understand or heal the above issues.

Codependency is about relationships and how others can affect us in unhealthy ways. This can often look like being consumed by worries for how others are doing (family, friends, colleagues, etc.), people-pleasing, not expressing our own thoughts/feelings, and/or losing our sense of self. Our identity can be dependent on trying to “fix” other people’s problems and not focusing on our own. This may also be due to not recognizing our own emotions and/or problems. Therapy can help you improve the relationship you have with yourself and others.  

I can support learning ways to foster independence and break codependent patterns.  

I work from an attachment perspective with codependency, recognizing codependency as a style of relating often learned early in life, sometimes from within in the womb. We'll explore stories of connection: such as when you have felt most seen and heard, loved and cherished, as well as when you have felt yourself chameleon-ing to keep someone present in your life. We'll really look at what the cues are for when you feel safe to stay in the integrity of your Core Self vs. when you find yourself sacrificing what you really want to meet the needs of others, weighing them as more valuable than yourself. I'll reflect back to you when I see you excelling in moments of prioritizing yourself without disrespecting others, a beautiful balance of self- and other-love that allows for each person to be their own individual within the relationship.
