Anxiety or Fears

Chris Tickner

Marriage and Family Therapist, PhD, MFT
We all get anxious, it's a normal part of being human. Our brains have evolved to detect threats, both real and imagined. The problem is that the human brain has a hard time distinguishing between what is actually a threat in front of you (a bus about to run you over) and an imagined fear (giving a public speech). This is anxiety, and it can be devastating. If you have ever had a panic attack, you know how bad it can get. The good news is that recent evolution in the fields of psychology and neuroscience has given us powerful ways to overcome anxiety. Simple, effective, and powerful tools to reverse the impact of anxiety and stop it in its tracks. Anxiety is one of the most successfully treated conditions, and I would love to help you. Anxiety does not have to limit you anymore!

Anxiety is a very common issue I assist clients in gaining mastery of. A foundational assumption I follow is that it is helpful to assist clients in engaging with their fears rather than denying them, or invalidating them. This understanding is supported by research in a variety of areas, including behavioral therapy, which has shown that in order to desensitize an anxious response individuals benefit from exposure so long as it is done in way that the person is not overwhelmed. From a Cognitive Therapy perspective I have also come to appreciate that very often people's anxieties are fueled by extreme interpretations and beliefs they may be having related to the fear or anxiety. From Mindfulness approaches I have come to understand the value of shifting into an observer position through observing and describing, and I have come to appreciate how this ability represents developing greater integration of the mature executive functions of the frontal lobe with the primitive survival impulses of the limbic system. The ways that I make use of these understandings with each client vary based upon the difficulties they are having with anxiety and fear, but overall I tend to support my clients in finding healthy ways to settle themselves down physiologically and then helping them to engage with their fears, the related thoughts and beliefs they have, and to not be held back from taking actions that are in their best interests based upon fears. Sometimes this involves helping clients learn meditative skills. Sometimes it involves helping them to plan out and then carry out steps in confronting fears. Sometimes it involves reprocessing traumas or anxiety producing situations in a controlled way. Sometimes it involves working with them to find new ways of thinking. Usually, in fact, I find that a combination of these is most helpful but again this is guided by each client, their situation, preferences, strengths, etc.

Anxiety is a part of our primal warning system. It lets us know that danger is approaching and kicks in our fight or flight response, so that we can run from a wild animal and not be eaten. Past trauma can live in us and unconsciously trigger a flood of emotion in reaction to something seemingly unrelated. I want to help you identify your triggers and why they are happening. I’ll help you recognize signals like tightness in the chest or a knot in the stomach and then give you tools to ground yourself. Learning to self-regulate and control your level of anxiety can make a world of difference to how you experience life. I want to support and guide you to an easier way of being.

In my practice, understanding and addressing anxiety and fears involves a holistic approach that recognizes these experiences as deeply intertwined with the nervous system's response to both past and present traumas. This perspective acknowledges that anxiety often signals unresolved issues demanding attention, guiding us towards a journey of healing and connection with our authentic selves. Central to our therapeutic work is the regulation of the nervous system, a critical step in creating a foundation for processing traumas and alleviating the physical and emotional manifestations of anxiety. By fostering a state of calm and safety within the body, we open pathways for individuals to explore the deeper sources of their anxiety and fears, which often stem from unprocessed traumas and the disconnection from their true selves. Together, we embark on a process of gently uncovering and working through these traumas, aiming to understand their impact and integrate these experiences in a way that promotes healing and resilience. This journey is not just about managing symptoms but about transforming the relationship with anxiety and fear, viewing these emotions as part of a larger narrative of self-discovery and personal growth. By re-establishing a connection to the authentic self, individuals are empowered to navigate their lives with a renewed sense of clarity, purpose, and inner strength. This reconnection also facilitates a deeper understanding of one's needs, desires, and boundaries, leading to more fulfilling relationships and a life that truly reflects one's values and aspirations. Through this compassionate and depth-oriented approach, anxiety and fears are transformed from overwhelming challenges into opportunities for profound healing and self-realization, paving the way for a life lived with greater peace, authenticity, and empowerment.
