In therapy I explore with the individual and/or group significance of their careers in their lives (e.g., identity, status, sense of purpose, sense of accomplishment) and discuss how their think it contributes to their self-esteem. We also brainstorm about perceived sources of self-esteem as to whether it is related or unrelated to employment (e.g., meaningful relationships with spouses, partners, children, friendships, hobbies, recreation and spiritual fulfillment).

Low self esteem and a poor self image, which can get to a point for some people of self-hatred, erodes your life. In spite of achievements, you never feel good enough, and can't feel truly at peace. Because poor self esteem is often a lifelong problem, it can be very hard to resolve on your own. It is often related to trauma in childhood. When I work with clients who struggle with low self esteem, I want to understand how they came to the belief that they are generally not good enough. We also will look at how habits of thought, feeling, behavior, and self care may be reinforcing a negative self image, and work on making changes so a positive self image can be reinforced instead.

Loving one's self is so core to wellness. The Golden Rule (Do unto others as you would have them do to you.) actually speaks to that profoundly. We are always training everyone in our lives how to treat us. If we don't love ourselves, then it is likely that we will train those around us to treat us in the same way we treat ourselves.
