No one really knows what is happening in your relationship other than you two. That isolation can be difficult especially when the patterns you've created lead you towards the same arguments and anger again and again. Reaching out for help can be hard because being honest about the issues you face is more difficult than pretending they're not really there. I'm thankful you're here today. Getting help is a sign of strength in a relationship, not a sign of weakness. Your desire for change is a marker of hope. I know things are hard right now, but you don't have to figure it out by yourself. Let's work together to find solutions and a path forward.

Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. Here is a list of them. 1) Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? 2) It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." 3) Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy.Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too).

Life can be hard. Sometimes we have difficulty communicating with our partner, boss, children, or our parents. Sometimes we have difficulty adjusting to a new environment or new life circumstances. At times, we may feel stuck and unsure of how to make changes in our lives. Other times we may want to delve deeper and truly understand our motivations and desires. Sometimes we just need to feel heard and understood. Having an unbiased, non judgmental person to talk to can help. I really enjoy working with couples and families- helping people see things from another perspective and develop healthier ways to communicate with one another is a strength of mine. I have done extensive post graduate training in Marriage and Family Therapy at The Ackerman Institute for the Family, The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and The Link Counseling Center where I completed a 3 year residency.
