LGBTQ individuals seek mental health professionals for issues that are not related to their LGBTQ identity, but they also have their own specific needs in working with a psychologist/psychotherapist. First of all, and this is obvious, acceptance and tolerance from the mental health professional are important. A non-stigmatizing attitude that will not support and aggravate the prejudices of LGBTQ individuals towards themselves and the LGBTQ group as a whole. This requires some information from the specialist on LGBTQ issues. However, there is also a less obvious factor in working with LGBTQ people. This is the factor of so-called LGBTQ-connected stress. This is an additional level of everyday stress that is imposed on LGBTQ people, in addition to the "human" level of everyday stress. This specific, additional stress can be caused by: the need to hide one's orientation or identity, fear of condemnation and rejection, real or perceived threats to life, financial well-being, social environment security and other factors. Often, LGBTQ-related stress becomes such an integral part of an LGBTQ person's life that it becomes invisible, affecting subconsciously and undermining psychological well-being on a constant basis. Research has shown that, unfortunately, LGBTQ people are statistically prone to an increased risk of developing depressive and anxiety disorders. This may be directly related to the additional emotional burden that LGBTQ-related stress represents. To work directly, directly with LGBTQ-related stress, the Transdiagnostic LGBTQ Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapy approach was developed. This is a short-term approach (3-6 months of weekly meetings), based on the Unified Protocol for CBT and LGBTQ research. This specialized therapeutic approach helps to identify the factors of additional stress in LGBTQ people and work with them directly. Easing the daily emotional state and improving the quality of life. If you are an LGBTQ person and would like to contact me for another format of therapy, not focused on LGBTQ-related stress, I will also be happy to help you. In my arsenal are techniques of general CBT, schema therapy and Prolonged Exposure.
