Ellicott City, Maryland therapist: Stacey Hellman, licensed clinical social worker
Eating Disorders

Stacey Hellman

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-C
I include eating disorder behavior in the category of "self-harm" or "addictions" and treat them the same way as I treat any addictive behavior. I believe that addictive behaviors have underlying meanings and I can help clients understand and decode what those meanings are for any particular behavior. For example, food-restricting behavior (commonly referred to as Anorexia) always has to do with trying to gain a sense of control when other areas of the clients life are totally out of control. I'm constantly saying "it's not really about the food" because there are always deeper issues that need to be addressed and the behavior is just a symptom, it's not the real problem. I don't believe in any kind of calorie counting, food measuring, or focusing on weight for clients with eating disorder behavior. Instead I focus on what the behavior is TELLING us, and what needs are trying to be met by engaging in the behavior.

Frederick, Maryland therapist: Catherine Cabrera, licensed professional counselor
Eating Disorders

Catherine Cabrera

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, LCPC, LMHC
For many high-achieving women, struggles with food and body image can become tied to perfectionism, control, and the pressure to always be “doing better.” What may start as trying to be healthy or disciplined can slowly turn into constant mental noise around food, guilt after eating, or rigid rules that are exhausting to maintain. I work with women navigating eating disorders and disordered eating using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Together, we explore the patterns that keep these cycles going while building practical tools to reduce shame, manage difficult emotions, and develop a more stable relationship with food and your body. My approach is supportive, honest, and empowering—creating a space where you don’t have to hide the struggle and can begin moving toward balance rather than constant self-criticism.
