Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Dr. Patricia Webbink, psychologist
Gambling

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
For many years, I have offered an Addictions program for individuals, couples, and groups. The root of any addiction often lies in dysfunctional family experiences in childhood. Whatever form it takes, whether gambling, overeating, substance abuse, etc., the addictive cycle is in place because it often numbs feelings or serves as an attempt to fill an inner emptiness. I use various methods to stop the addiction by assisting the healing of its roots and replacing it with more functional ways, like Mindfulness, for dealing with needs and feelings. I have developed a safe and effective approach using guided imagery with music leading to an altered state of consciousness that can serve as a substitute for the "high" that one gets with drugs. Gamblers learn to recognize how they are putting their health, family ties, personal growth, and social life at risk. Often they are “self-medicating” their depression or anxiety with the gambling addiction, and in therapy they find far better ways of dealing with these problems. My colleagues and I have done family and friend interventions for addictions. I offer regular free Zoom seminars that feature Mindfulness techniques that are being utilized worldwide in therapy for Gambling. Prince George, British Columbia therapist: Aria Fraser, hypnotherapist
Gambling

Aria Fraser

Hypnotherapist, Certified Rapid Transformational Therapist
Gambling habits and addictions are usually not really about getting money, but the thrill and the rush of feel-good chemicals the brain makes when the person scores a win. Gambling is usually driven by a deep need to feel enough or feel alive, and to fill an emptiness that arises from not feeling enough or having enough. The origin is often from a belief that was unknowingly formed early in life that the person wasn't good enough somehow, and this drives the behavior to fill that need. Rapid Transformational Therapy helps to find the root cause of the beliefs, then interrupt and release them, while creating new pathways in the brain that create effective change away from the unwanted behavior. Then, beneficial beliefs and visualizations are 'installed' at the subconscious level to replace them, along with ongoing support after the session.
