Are you ready to learn how to stop putting yourself last and finally start nurturing yourself first? If so, then you are in the right place. My name is Karla Lawrence, and I’m so happy you’re here. Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Shelby Willoughby, licensed clinical social worker
Narrative Therapy

Shelby Willoughby

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LMSW
Are you experiencing difficulty with life adjustments or social connectedness? I am passionate about working with those who are struggling with eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, grief, relational and social difficulties, and members of the LQBTQIA+ community. I believe that the foundation of developing an authentic self is understanding the body's response to life experiences and understanding how it functions under stress. Together, we will create a safe, supportive, and trauma-aware space to begin healing. In settings such as partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient, I have worked with adults and teens experiencing binge eating, purging, anorexia, orthorexia, excessive exercise, OSFED, ARFID, and body image issues. Throughout sessions, I complete evaluations to determine whether you or a loved one requires more intensive/supportive eating disorder treatment. In addition, I complete bariatric evaluations that are required for the surgical process. This service helps determine readiness, address any concerns about underlying eating disorder behavior, provide pre/post therapeutic support, and explore alternatives to surgery. I am trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to assist patient's needs and use collaborative methodologies to facilitate supportive communication, reconnection, problem solving, and positive decision-making with teens, adults, and families. I hope to hear from you and look forward to jump starting your mental health journey.

Psychologist, Ph.D.
The men I work with usually feel stuck, on edge, or disconnected from themselves and the people around them. They’re tired of dealing with the same patterns, and if we’re being honest, they’re pretty hard on themselves for it too. You’ve probably had that moment of “I’m not doing this again”… and then somehow you’re right back there. A lot of what’s underneath that is trauma, anxiety, guilt, or habits that don’t change no matter how much effort you put in. My job is to help you actually understand what’s going on, not just slap a label on it, and then use evidence-based trauma therapy to help you do something about it. This isn’t just talking. It’s learning a set of skills that helps you get unstuck and move differently. Progress starts to look like having more control over your reactions, feeling less on edge, and not getting pulled into the same mental loops over and over. Instead of constantly reacting, you’re able to step back and respond in a way that actually lines up with who you want to be. Sessions with me are direct, collaborative, and grounded. You don’t need the perfect words or a full explanation of everything that’s happened to get started. We focus on what works so you can get your life back.
