Logan Smlth

Psychologist, PhD
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves unwanted and repetitive thoughts or feelings (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Sometimes your compulsions can be physical actions (like checking a lock, or washing your hands, touching something, etc.) or mental actions (like mentally backtracking your steps, planning everything carefully, counting etc.). Sometimes people with OCD feel “out of control” or incredibly distressed if they don’t do a compulsion in response to an obsession. OCD can feel more intense during periods of stress, and is often accompanied with depression symptoms or other forms of anxiety. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the therapy I typically use in the treatment of OCD; it can also be helpful for certain phobias. This therapy will involve careful, preplanned, gradual exposures to the focus of OCD, while helping you learn how to stop yourself from acting on your compulsion. Clients experiencing OCD are often doubtful of their ability to control their compulsions, but find ERP to be surprisingly effective. An ERP treatment course usually involves weekly, one-hour appointments for as long as they seem appropriate, at which point I usually decrease the frequency of appointments gradually (moving to once every two weeks, once every three weeks, etc.). Some clients benefit from meeting more often than once per week, which is something we can discuss if it seems appropriate.
