I can help you navigate the challenges of OCD by exploring and addressing the intrusive thoughts and compulsions that disrupt your daily life. We’ll use approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to gradually reduce the hold these symptoms have on you. I’ll be there to support you in developing practical strategies to manage your anxiety and resist the urge to engage in compulsive behaviors. Through our sessions, we’ll work on building your confidence and skills to regain control and improve your overall well-being. My goal is to support you in finding relief from OCD and creating a more balanced, fulfilling life.

Saint Louis, Missouri therapist: Jennifer L Abel, psychologist
OCD

Jennifer L Abel

Psychologist, Ph.D.
I use primarily exposure and response prevention (ERP). I've treated dozens of people with OCD. I've always been keenly interested in OCD. My review comparing SSRIs (anti-depressants that help OCD) and ERP was published in the peer reviewed journal Behaviour Research & Therapy. I found that ERP is more effective unless you are severely depressed or have poor insight. Most people with OCD, at some level, understand their fears are unwarranted but feel they can't stop and realize they have OCD. If this describes you then you are likely to respond well to ERP.

I have a passion for helping clients reduce OCD - a disorder that is very time consuming and debilitating. This kind of work is so very difficult, but for those that can make it into therapy and take advantage of exposure and response prevention, the results are astounding.
