Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, MSEd, SIFI
The paralysis experienced when depressed is best illustrated by Dick Cavett who said, that the "depths of depression are so overwhelming that if a magic wand was available to rid the symptoms, you'd be too fatigued and hopeless to use it." The feelings of meaningless, powerlessness, and exhaustion are often compounded by messages from others and perhaps yourself that "you just need to try harder" creating a cascade of diminished self-esteem, and increased self-blame. You do not need to languish in silence, alone. Psychotherapy can help you to regain a sense of purpose, energy and meaning in your life. I utilize a combination of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy for Depression, Skills Training for Affective and Interpersonal Regulation, Internal Family Systems, Schema Therapy and am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

Depression is insidious. We don't always know where it comes from. Like with anxiety, some people are born with a predisposition to see the glass half-empty rather than half-full. It feels awful. It slows you down. It makes it hard to feel motivated to go after what you want. It makes it hard to enjoy the things you are surrounded by and have the opportunity to take advantage of. If it becomes severe (such that you've stopped going to work or have a hard time getting out of bed) I will refer you for an evaluation for medication. Much has changed in this arena in the last couple of decades and there are medications that might help you out of the morass and without the complications of side effects that are associated with some of the earlier drugs. However, hopefully it won't come to that. My aim is to help you figure out what's getting in your way, emotionally, and causing you to feel depressed. If you are motivated to accept new insights to your habitual way of thinking, it's possible to start feeling less depressed and more willing to be present in the world. There's no magic. I wish there were. Some people come in expecting a "solution" to their problems in five easy lessons, but it doesn't work that way. Therapy is a process, and it applies to depression as well as any other condition or state of mind you might find yourself in. But it's rarely impossible if you're willing to make the commitment to work through your stumbling blocks, you're likely to begin to climb up out of the darkness you feel you're trapped in. I'd like to help you do that.

Struggles with coping with depression can lead to problems with relationships, work, or other areas of our lives. Through a cooperative, supportive relationship with the right therapist, you can learn how to cope with depression and get more of what you want from life. You can understand what you can and can't control, and if any of your own behaviors and conflicts are contributing to your unhappiness. By talking with someone you trust and feel comfortable with, I believe anyone can learn to know themselves better and to get more of what they want from life.

You’d don’t have to suffer alone. Talking through your depression can improve feelings of numbness, sadness, hopelessness and despair. Even if you’ve been in therapy before and feel like nothing helps, come talk about it.
