Dr. Brian Sharpless
Psychologist, Ph.D., Clinical Psychology; M.A., Philosophy
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a very treatable condition. However, it can be misdiagnosed for other disorders, and this can delay treatment gains. Following a thorough evaluation to establish BPD, I use one of three forms of contemporary psychodynamic therapy (i.e., Transference-Focused psychotherapy, Mentalization-Based Treatment, or Supportive Therapy) alone or in combination. All of these therapies have been tested in clinical trials. I have published professional works (e.g., articles; a book) on psychodynamic therapy. Please note that I do not do couple's therapy and that I will not schedule appointments intended for other people (e.g., spouses, family members). All potential patients must contact me directly.

Maria T. Alonso, Ph.D.
Psychologist
I support individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) through evidence-based treatments designed to stabilize emotions and improve interpersonal relationships. One of the most effective therapies for BPD is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. DBT helps individuals develop skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. This helps reduce self-destructive behaviors and enhances overall wellbeing. Additionally, I incorporate Schema Therapy that can help address deeply ingrained patterns of thinking and behavior by helping individuals understand and change maladaptive schemas developed from past experiences. By utilizing these evidence-based approaches, I aim to provide a structured and supportive environment where individuals with BPD can work towards greater emotional stability, helathier relationships and improved quality of life.

Tulsa carries the historical weight of the 1921 Greenwood Massacre — one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in American history — and the ongoing work of community healing and reckoning with that legacy shapes the cultural context in which many local therapists work. The city has significant Native American and African American communities, and therapists offering trauma-informed and culturally affirming care are an important part of the local landscape. Tulsa's oil-dependent economy creates psychological vulnerability during downturns, and therapists frequently address financial anxiety, occupational stress, and the identity challenges tied to an industry in transition. Saint Francis Health System and Ascension St. John provide major institutional mental health resources alongside a growing independent practice community.
