Dr. Peter R Giancola

Psychologist, Ph.D.
One of my top specialties is treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). In fact, persons with OCD tend to seek me out personally as a therapist. Patients with OCD comprise a significant percentage of my clinical practice. The most effective psychological intervention for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), distraction, and thought stopping. However, these alone are not enough. I also integrate mindfulness therapy, guided meditation and progressive relaxation techniques with the primary ERP intervention. Medications are also very useful for clients who are so inclined and I will work with your medical doctor or psychiatrist so that I can offer you an intervention that has the highest likelihood of success. Although no medication has been designed specifically for OCD, the most effective medication in the SSRI class has been shown to be Luvox (fluvoxamine). Another effective medication is Anafranil (clomipramine). It is not used often nowadays because it comes from an older class of antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants, which have greater negative side effects compared with Luvox.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder that affects people of all ages. Obsessions are unwanted intrusive thoughts, images or urges that trigger distress. Compulsions are behaviours that individuals engage in to try to get rid of the obsessions and/or decrease the distress. OCD treatment can be really difficult and requires a lot of support. I am here to help. I have specialized training in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and also use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat OCD.
